The Hotel Marlowe is great. The style of the rooms is very hip and urban and you get all the amenities of a true boutique hotel. The odd thing about it is that it is basically attached to the Cambridgeside Galleria (which is the local shopping mall). It also seems that this is the basic attraction in the general area of this hotel, so if you want to go on vacation and spend lots of time shopping at a mall (that is probably very similar to the one you have in your town) this is the hotel for you! This hotel is fairly close to the Lechmere T stop on the Green Line, so you can get downtown fairly easily if you want to. It is also pretty convenient to some of the more northern attractions, such as the Science Museum and the Fleet Center (or the TD BankNorth Garden, as they are calling it these days). It would also be a great place to stay on a business trip if your company is located in Cambridge.
Enjoy!

The Kendall Hotel is one of the cutest hotels I have ever seen. It is an old fire station that has been made over into a hotel. The location is very convenient - it is steps from the Kendall Square T stop and bus stop, steps from MIT as well. If any faculty or prospective students are visiting or if anyone is traveling to visit any of the pharmaceutical companies or biotech companies in Kendall Square, this would be a great hotel for you to choose! In my experience, I have found that this hotel, although it is a bit of a boutique hotel, does not really carry as much of the boutique hotel price tag (probably because it is not technically downtown). There is a great little restaurant right in the entrance of the hotel called the Black Sheep. It is also right across the street from Legal Seafoods and a few steps from Characters Bar and Grill. There is not as much going on in Kendall Square, but for what is going on, this is a great location, and it is easy to get downtown from here.
Enjoy!

Odyssey Cruises are amazing! When my husband and I were first dating, I surprised him by bringing him on one of these cruises (to impress him, of course!) and it was one of the fanciest (and most fun) experiences we have ever had! When you are arriving at the boat, they take your photo for you to keep afterward (I think you probably have to pay for the photo, I don't really remember). We lined up to check in at the front desk of the boat and were just mesmerized at how nice all the decor looked. I had paid a bit extra to get the "celebration" package and so while we were standing in the line, the manager came and pulled us out of the line and brought us over to a VIP table that was decorated really nicely and had a bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us. We kicked off the evening with a glass of champagne. The ship then took off into the Boston Harbor. We had our own server who was very attentive, yet respectful. After dinner, we danced to the music provided by a live band. Our server then advised us that the captain had invited us up into the front of the ship to view the city at night from out in the Harbor - it was spectacular!! On warm nights you can visit the top deck of the ship (which we tried, but it was FREEZING!). I believe the entire thing lasted 3 or 4 hours. It was really wonderful and extremely romantic. Worth every penny!
Enjoy!

When my husband and I first announced that we were getting married, we were surprised that several of our guests began requesting that we hire Konditor Meister to bake our wedding cake - they all raved about the quality and taste of their cakes and so we were excited when we found that Konditor Meister was the included baker in our reception package at the hotel where we held our reception. We went down to Braintree and had a cake tasting and the cakes do indeed taste very good! We were a bit concerned, though, because Konditor Meister is a bit like a large cake factory that services much of the region, so we were worried that they might not be able to keep our order straight, since we did our cake tasting 5 months prior to our wedding. They assured us, however that everything would be fine and even encouraged us to leave the cake topper we had brought with us with them since it would be one less thing we would need to worry about as we planned the rest of our wedding. After being reassured by them, we finally agreed to leave the cake topper there (which I had recently purchased for $65!). Fast forward to the wedding day - we toured the reception site prior to the arrival of the guests, and there was no cake topper on our cake! Our coordinator called Konditor Meister and they had "no record" of our cake topper and to this day (2.5 years later) have not taken responsibility for it. For that reason, I would not recommend them, although the cake is delicious!

The Gamble Mansion is owned by the Boston Center for Adult Education. It is an old mansion that was built around the turn of the century (1904 or 05, I think). It is located at 5 Commonwealth Avenue, right next to Newbury Street. It has a beautiful ballroom, which the original owners added on to the mansion about 10 years after it was originally constructed in time for their daughter's dรฉbutante ball. It is really very nice and is available for rental (for weddings, etc). The rental price is extremely reasonable and the client is allowed to bring their own food and alcohol (although the site requires that the bar be "open"). If you are looking for an inexpensive location to host an event in the fancier part of the city, definitely check this place out!

The Boston Center for Adult Education is great. With Boston being known for its academic excellence, it seems everyone is always striving to improve themselves in some way. The BCAE serves that need for most people. The BCAE owns the Gamble Mansion at 5 Commonwealth Avenue (right by Newbury Street and all the exciting sightseeing and shopping available in the area of town). Most of the courses occur at this Mansion. Courses vary in length from a couple of hours in total to 8 weeks or so. I took an 8 week calligraphy course through the BCAE with a couple of friends and we calligraphed all my wedding invitations - they came out beautifully! They offer hundreds of classes, from ballroom dancing, to photography, to real estate, etc - mostly anything you can think of! It is really an active and wonderful center and I highly recommend checking it out!

I have long admired Healthworks (although, I have had to do so from afar, since their price tag is quite high!). The price is normally about $79 per month. If I had the extra money to join, however, I certainly would. I have toured the facilities several times and have been impressed every time. The instructors are world class; the equipment is state of the art; the classes are always just what you would like to take - they even have a nice whirlpool tub to relax in when you are done. I believe they have recently added day spa facilities as well. And the best part is that women can attend without feeling nervous about being catcalled by the men - since there are none! :) It really is a dream of mine to join once I have the money.
Enjoy!

I grew up in Middleboro and I was always fascinated by the Hannah B Shaw Home for the Aged. I imagine it is probably quite expensive to live there, but it is so beautiful, it seems exactly like the type of place anyone would want to live! It looks like a large old mansion with wonderfully well kept grounds. I visited this nursing home on several occasions growing up - whether to sing Christmas Carols or just to stop by and visit with school groups. I remember that the residents always looked happy and were always well groomed and well dressed. The staff always seemed extremely friendly and dedicated. If I ever need to live in a nursing home, The Shaw Home would be my first choice!

Rockland Trust Company feels like a hometown bank. When you go inside, they still have the lollipops for the kids and smiles on their faces. The staff is extremely friendly and try very hard to help you out. I have fond memories of opening my very first checking and savings account here when I was in high school and even earlier than that (When it was Middleboro Trust Company) going in every once in a while to deposit all my change into my passbook savings account. They have a drive up window to help you when you are in a hurry. This bank is really a fixture in the community and a great place to bank if you are in the market for a new bank!

Maria's has been standing tall in the center of town FOREVER. It is a great little store that sells overpriced cards and gifts. It also offers all kinds of random services. For example, when I was growing up nearby, whenever my family needed to send or receive a fax, we could go to Maria's and they had a fax number that we could pay a little money to use. Back when there were lots of little shops and cafes downtown, Maria's was certainly a great place to stop in and visit on an afternoon of shopping. The shops seem to have slowly disappeared downtown, but Maria's still stands. It is worth a visit if you are in Middleboro and looking for something to do (since there is not a whole lot to do otherwise!).
Enjoy!
