This is not the cheapest store, nor do they have the best styles of shoes, their specialty is uniform shoes for all the private and parish elementary schools & high schools on staten island. Also, I have found this store does wonders with special orthopedic shoes if your child should need them. They will either recommend shoes for foot problems (like pigeon-toe) or try to recraft non-orthopedic shoes with orthopedic parts put in. I wouldn't shop there for non-specialty shoes, but if you need them, theyre great.

Everything Goes has a great vintage clothes and accessories store (see my review) but my favorite of their 3 stores is the furniture store. you could literally furnish an apartment for $1000. EASY. they have vintage furniture from cast-off found-on-the-curb level on up to serious antiques, and they're all priced amazingly fairly. and 10% off for cash & carry!
if you need furniture fast...and you dont need it to match, this should be your first stop.

If you go to yoga to look hot in your outfit, pick up limber guys or gals, or have no interest in the spiritiual side of yoga, then don't go to laughing lotus yoga! if you want a really comfortable, nurturing, spiritual but fun environment, then make your way down there. check out the website. they have great intro deals and free intro classes scheduled throughout the month. I go to their beginner classes and love them. it's $10-15 a class singly but they have lots of multi-class plans if you buy ahead.
warning to guys: decor is a bit girly, and the classes are at least 80% female usually, but guys are definitely welcome and not singled out.

Out in Brooklyn is the home of the best hummus i have ever eaten, and their bread is sooooo good. I cannot say enough great things about the food at Sahara. The garden out back is open in the warm weather and is very nice, but when it's cold you're stuck in the no-decor dining rooms...but who cares? it's worth it for the food. best hummus, best kabobs in the city, period.
Look for the giant revolving meat stick on the giant sign out front, you can't miss Sahara!

CVS, Duane Reade, Genovese...they're always so packed and never have any time to talk to you like a human being. Who hasn't had their insurance rejected, orders screwed up, refills denied by one of the big guys and it takes days to sort out? If you're looking for a good local pharmacy, go to Arrochar Pharmacy. The pharmacists know what they're doing, have time to actually explain things to you, and you don't feel like cattle.

The Dr. Teddy Atlas Foundation was started by famous boxer and sports commentator (and staten islander) Teddy Atlas in memory of his father. This is a great flexible charity for underprivledged Staten Islanders in times of need. They have the ability to take on small and specific needs, as opposed to larger charities. for example the foundation just donated the money for new basketball courts at Goodhue Center on SI. Focusing on kids and sports, Teddy uses his connections in the pro sports world to make his kids scholarship sports camp very inspiring and fun to kids who otherwise wouldn't get a chance to go to summer camp at all.
Donate to this great charity or come out to one of their many fund raisers during the year.

The New York Center for Interpersonal Development (Used to be known as Young People's Information Service - YPIS) does a great service to the community - they provide mediation of smaller court cases and community disputes. And there are a lot of community disputes on Staten Island, as you know if you live here. A lot of "get your tree off my property" kind of stuff that just bogs down the courts but can be so easily mediated into a solution. NYCID teaches classes in mediation, runs programs in island high schools to teach peer mediation, and lightens the load on our busy civil courts. Either donate your time or donate some funds to this great island program.

I have a crazy Jack Russel Terrier/American Eskimo mix and that's a handful, even if he is small. he bites, he claws, he hates everything about the vet. but the vets and aides at south shore animal hospital are so good at handling him i wouldnt think of taking him anywhere else. 11 years and going strong with them and hopefully my dog will last a good deal more years under their care.

I've used Jerry at Soft Paws for years now, and trust me, my dog is a handful. We left him in a kennel at the vet only once and we came back a day later and he had a big sign on his cage saying "He Bites" and the poor puppy was so miserable. Since then, we've used Soft Paws. I was a little leery of letting people have the codes to my alarms, and keys to my house, but I have never found a hair out of place when I returned. It's a relief to know I can go away without feeling too guilty about the pets left behind.
