The new or occasional knitter may be a bit intimidated by sinking so much money into a yarn purchase, but the avid and professional knitter, this is a godsend for finding high-end supplies locally.

Michael’s Diner is a pretty typical diner. Sandwiched between the rapid tracks at Shaker Square, the long, narrow space looks pretty much like any other greasy spoon. The gyros are really good, but the rest of the food doesn’t do much to contradict the “typical diner”ness of the place. Grilled cheeses can be greasy, pickle spears are limp from the heat of the bland fries. One exception is the sweet potato fries, which, if they’re not soggy, are very good.

The Larchmere Tavern at noon on any given weekday might as well be the restaurant of a country club. Ladies in tans and golf skirts, men in khakis, mingle with business lunches and families. It’s a charming atmosphere. The bread is plain white but remarkably good, and I highly recommend the buffalo chicken salad. Note: Service is usually rather slow. If you can’t find a parking spot on the street, there’s a lot in back.

The Academy Tavern is famous for its Academy Burger, which is good but is pretty much a run-of-the-mill bacon cheeseburger. The rest of the food is hit-or-miss in my experience. It’s always packed, so a lot of people like the food, but I’ve never been that thrilled with it. Plus it’s smoky, and the service ranges from slow to interminable. Get carryout if you’re in a hurry.

This charming shop is home to some of the loveliest cards, stationery, gift items, and gift wrap to be found in Shaker Heights. The owners do a wonderful job of selecting the merchandise, and the staff is always very friendly. You can walk in empty-handed and leave with a great gift, a card to go with it, and the paper to wrap it in. I often hear “where did you find this?” about my RSVP purchases.
