The Charles is Baltimore City's Art theatre. It doesn't usually play the action packed Hollywood crap that we are flooded with on a daily basis. The movies they play are more international and usually require a few more brain cells to enjoy. The Charles has improved its facilities over the past 5 years. Exposed brick, leather lounge chairs and of course, the typical over priced popcorn. However, if you get their early, they have a nice restaurant attached to the theatre...i forget the name of it. Its a nice experience...i tend to go to the daily movies for they are cheaper and its not as crowded with the suburbanites.

Video Americain is a great place to find more artistic videos. Aside from the Cold Spring Lane location, there is also one of the 3100 Block of St. Paul in Charles Village. At that location, they have their videos arranged by directors. But the staff is very friendly and will help you find anything you need. The prices are on par with the major chains. Video Americain is great if you are trying to find those classics as well as International movies. I love this place.

They do in house work. The best thing about this place is that they can do custom work. If you need burning and dodging done, thats no problem. I also once had them create an image from two different Black and White negatives. It came out well. They also deal with sensitive material. I had some nude work that i needed printed and i told them up front and it was no problem. But as with any custom work, it comes at a price. They are not over expensive, but more on par, which is just expensive anyway.

I don’t know how long its been around, but I know Lexington Market has been going for over 100 years. This place is located about 5 blocks north from Camden Yards and is a great place for lunch. There are numerous vendors inside cooking up everything from raw oysters to fried chicken livers to roasted turkey sandwiches. You can also buy fresh veggies, fruit, fish, and meats. For dessert, I often just get a pastry. The only bad thing about this place is that it is located in a fairly poor part of Baltimore City. So if you are scared of street people asking you for change, I would just go to your local Wal-Mart Deli. In terms of prices, you will not get a cheaper lunch this close to downtown unless you pack your own.

This is a great organic type of place to eat. The prices are low low low. The coffee is good. It has a very laid back atmosphere. If you are looking for sophisticated, this is not the place for you. However, they do also have a nice bar if you want a beer or some wine with your drink. Its very simple food, but pure in taste and in ingredients. That is what I like about it. When you leave after eating, you don’t feel that you are going to put more pot holes in Baltimore City streets. Sometimes the people who work there are moving on the slow side, so just go to enjoy, chat with you eating companion, and relax.

This place offers food and coffee. The food, usually, is really good. I tend to really get into their salads; my favorite is the Granny Smith Apple Gorgonzola with Raspberry Vinaigrette. The also offer a multitude of other interesting salads as well as pastas, little pizza things, and sandwiches. The best thing about their sandwiches is that they are served on real bread—French in design, which means for those not used to this, they say it’s too chewy, but for me, it is a wonderful texture with honest taste. Yes, bread can be tasty. Regarding the coffee, I tend to stay away from their espresso bar; it’s too bitter and I don’t think the employees get the best training on how to make their drinks. The regular drip coffee is quite good though as well as their large selection of hot teas.

This place has changed over the years. It used to be a very uber-artistic crowd that populated the tables at 3am. However, it has gained more popularity among the “normal” college types. The last time I was there, there appeared to be the likes of sorority girls at table near me. However, for a 24-7 place to get grub, I recommend the Paper Moon. Food prices are not that bad and the selection is good. If you hit the place during their late night weekend after club hours, you may have to wait for a place to sit, but at least the odd and amusing decorations can give you entertainment during your wait.

Taste of Egyptian and Mediterranean Cuisines. Al Pacino’s offers a variety of foods. However, I wish to focus on their pizzas. Fast food pizza places—Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, etc—have such high sodium content that after I eat their pizza, I must drink gallons of water. The pizza from Al Pacino’s doesn’t do this to me. Aside from a very natural taste because of the natural ingredients, Al Pacino’s offers a wide and unique selection of pizza. From pizzas with Indian toppings to Mexican toppings, your choices are abundant. For a more luxurious pizza, you can add seafood, such as crabmeat, shrimp, scallops, and/or salmon. When you want a pizza with a bit more flare, I suggest you try Al Pacino’s in Mt. Vernon.

Cafe Cafe used to be one of the best places in Mt. Vernon to enjoy a cup of coffee and/or have dinner. The food was of high quality and average price. However, the food quality seems to have diminished and the price has sky rocketed. A simple lunch sandwich is going to run you around $12. If you are like me and eat out frequently, this can easily kill your budget. However, i do enjoy having a cup of coffee and eating pastries. Their cakes are homemade and offer some very good selections. Also a nice feature of City Cafe is the space. They decorate the facility with local art work, which is for sale. Also, Cite Cafe is in the heart of Mt. Vernon and the sites and sounds are enjoyable. If i do eat their, I tend to do Sunday Brunch and get one of their omelets. But again, because of the price, this is only on rare occasions.

This place is great. It is geared towards the queer community but is respectful towards any client. I have been using their services for over 5 years. They provide case management, take so many types of medical insurance, if you are lucky to have insurance and if you are not, they help work with the city and state agencies to get you coverage, dental services, psychological services, pharmacy services, nutrition, etc. It is an all in one type of place. They also have two locations, one in Mt. Vernon and the other in Pikesville. I highly recommend this place, especially for non-heterosexuals.
