Sam & Chris are good, competent hair stylists who bring an international flavor to the neighborhood. They are utterly lacking in pretension, which makes the atmosphere an easy one in which to get a wash and a cut as well as other stylistic flourishes one may want. I never have ventured beyond the classic wash & cut, so I don't know how well they do a perm or coloring, etc. I always have Sam cut my hair (except the time when a dashing young woman gave me a great cut for a big event, but I didn't catch her name). He is from Lebanon and we have had some interesting discussions about the political and religious situation in his home country. He is friendly, but not overbearing. I love his gentle style with the scissors and I've never been disappointed with my cut. It is around $45 (without tip) for the standard wash & cut, whcih is quite reasonable in this Upper West Side neighborhood.
