There is no way to make orthodontics pleasant. Knowing that your reward will be maybe five or ten years down the line, but having to wear braces now, is annoying. Despite these hurdles inherent to the business, Alizadeh Orthodontics does its best to make this experience as tolerable as possible. I spent a good five years going there regularly, and I think I went through most of the equipment that modern orthodontics has to offer. Today I have a lovely non-crooked underbite-free smile (despite never wearing my retainer...sorry Dr. Alizadeh). The assistant staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and Dr. Alizadeh himself is always happy to answer your questions. I highly recommend this orthodontist.

This Self Storage facility offers a wide variety of sizes of storage garages to keep all your stuff. The rate is monthly and reasonable, or there is a flat fee to use the space for a whole summer (to cater to all the college students in town). You can access the garages at any time with a key, even when the office is not open (namely weekends and after 5 or so, a minor drawback - this makes it rather inconvenient to get in to close out a garage when you are done with it). Overall a good deal, I would especially recommend going in on a storage place with a few people for the college students in town, since splitting the bill here is probably substantially cheaper than paying to keep things at the school over the summer.

For a person as blind as I am, it is important to know about good eye care places, and Clarkson Eyecare certainly qualifies. I go here for my annual eye exams and to buy glasses and contacts, and they are always fast, friendly, and good at answering any questions I may have. Prices are average to above-average, but the excellent service (even when busy) makes them worth it.

Pete's County Market is the main grocery store for Alexandria, as well as probably about a twenty mile radius of the surrounding population. Its selection is decent, and it is fairly good about having regular specials to even further improve its prices. My main gripe is that, given the broad area this store serves, it is a bit cramped (this is particularly noticeable in the parking lot, but you often have to jostle through aisles around tons of people's carts as well, which makes it feel like a rat race). Worth coming to for finding food beyond the bare-bones requirements sold in the smaller local grocery stores.

Carleton College is a liberal arts college with exceptional academics. Also, rather unusually for a liberal arts school, its science departments are very strong. There is a prevailing sentiment on campus of rampant liberalism (the occasional elitist treehugger sorts and so forth), but this is easy enough to overlook. There are also tons of clubs and other activities to get involved in, plus lots of opportunity to start something of your own. The facilities are first-rate, and the professors are generally enthusiastic and involved. A worthwhile college experience.

I have not used Vantage Credit Union heavily enough at the point to be able to attest to its wide variety of financial services. I was just looking for a place to open up a savings account, and Vantage was able to provide; setup was fast and easy, and they have given me no problems since. I eventually closed the account due to moving, but I do not have any gripes with them. As an added perk, they offer scholarships, which are not overly labor-intensive to complete and offer better money than most local scholarships, so check that out.

This is the best instrument repair shop that I have found. It is a long drive for me, and the waits to get my instrument back are often longish due to the amount of people who take their instruments there, but this is because they are the best (and they have a wall full of pictures of musicians who have come to their shop to prove it). They are extremely knowledgeable, and can help with things aside from just instrument repair (for instance, they put me in contact with the person I bought my used clarinet from). Trust your baby with these guys.

Mozingo's is a music supply store that seems fairly geared to young musicians (they offer private lessons, instrument rentals, and lots of starter instruments). The selection is decent, and the option to buy used instruments is always useful. They also have general supplies like sheet music, oil, reeds, grease, and all the other accoutrements associated with being a musician. Overall a good-quality music supply store.

I have used Lambert Airport quite a lot, and have virtually never run into problems with it. One recommendation I have if it is possible is to do electronic ticketing. A quick swipe of your credit card and selecting your destination is all you need to get on your way...you can even check bags! This resource is highly underutilized, meaning that the lines for it are short to nonexistent. Taking a little time to learn your way around, like any other airport, can help a lot. Now I see Lambert as a signal that I am nearly home.

Sure, it is the only laundromat in twenty miles, but is it really necessary to charge $1.25 to wash one load of laundry? Maybe I have just gotten used to cheap laundry at college, but that seems really expensive to me. I also have yet to see anyone actually working there, so if there is a problem (change machine, washer, or dryer not working) you have virtually no chance of getting it fixed. Assuming everything works well though, this laundromat is perfectly adequate.
