We were looking for Goggles and Costumes for Burning Man and the Mountain View Surplus seemed to have many of the things we're looking for.
MV Surplus is an army/navy surplus store that stocks all the random military and camping stuff you need.
Some of the burning man items we found: goggles (they have a great selection) to keep the dust out during the crazy playa dust storms, flasks (also a great selection) for all the partying you want to do, random kinds of flashlights, MREs and other freeze-dried food, ponchos, and best of all: flight suits of all different sizes and materials that you can wear out on the playa.
Overall, a great selection, and the prices are extremely resonable.

The food at the Empire Tap Room is distinctively American, and you can't beat the selections of beer. (They have over 20 kinds on tap, hence the name of the restrauant). Plus, they have a nifty outdoor dining area/patio, and the atmosphere is quite casual.
Prices of the dishes range from around $18-30 for the main courses, around $7-10 for the starters, and deserts are around $5-10. Very typical for the Palo Alto area.
The inner dining area is a bit small and cramped, so if the weather is cooperating (which in Palo Alto it almost always is), you should definatley sit outside.
Plan on spending about $35-40 per person including drinks, main course, dessert, and tip.

Diddams in Mtn View, of course, which sells all types of costumes and party favors.
We were looking for costumes we could wear to Burning Man on the playa, and Diddam's had all the random party hats you need. (We found over 20 kinds of furry hats).
The prices are moderately expensive--this isn't a discount store. But for the selection of paper plates, face paints, halloween costumes, and other random party favors, you can't beat Diddam's selection.
Our favorite find: 200 ft of "rope light" to light up our huge tent at burning man.
One caveat: for "open" costumes or "unpackaged" goods, all sales are final; Diddam's won't take them back.

Kirin serves authentic Hong-Kong style cantonese food and the prices are resonable (around $8-10 for each dish).
The restrauant is locateded on Mtn View's downtown Castro Street, where there are many other ethnic restrauants, cafes, and bookstores. There are typically lots of people during the evenings--even on weekdays--so Kirin is typically full at night.
The cuisine is good--not top notch--but for the prices they charge it's a great value. Some of my favorites: the seafood chow mein ($7) and the mongolian beef ($9) are great dishes. You also have to get the kung-pao tofu ($7) if you enough people with you.
