The Paramount is a hotel located in the heart of Times Square in New York City. The interior was designed by Ian Schrager and was recently bought by the media hotel chain located in South America.
The rooms at the Paramount are small. This is the one thing you notice as you get your guest room (a "standard" one) that the room is the size of a walk-in-closet. The bathroom is also tiny, and instead of getting a closet, you get a wardrobe the size of a small box.
The lobby is really neat though, there are several bars, and the lobby is spacious. The elevators are also mirrored and really neat looking as well.
But the rooms are small and expensive. Guess that's not surprising and out-of-the-ordinary for New York City.

Pizza My Heart is open till 2am, so you'll find all the Stanford and Palo Alto clubbers there after midnight. It's located on University Ave., the downtown and heart of Palo Alto, next to all the nightclubs and bars near Stanford University.
The reheated pizza served at 2am isn't spectacular but it's the greatest thing in the world after a night of drinking and partying. There's nothing like a slice of pepperoni or hawaiian pizza when you crave it the most.

Ugly's is Mountain View is one of the local dive bars where lots of residents hang out and play pool.
It's truely a dive bar in the sense; the beers are cheap, most of the people there are locals, and you'll find all the random dive bar games including darts, dice, and cards.
The bar is not exactly clean, but it's got all the atmoshpere of a dive bar so if that is what you are looking for, Ugly's is the place to go.
It's located on El Camino Real next to a military surplus and liquor store.

Pasta? has lots of great pasta dishes all for a resonable price ($8-12). It also has a full bar where you can order many great beers and wines.
Pasta? is located on Mountain View's castro street, where there are lots of extra cafes and dessert shops that you can go grab ice cream or gelato afterwards. Pasta? has great desserts as well, but why not go out when so many other cafes and shops are next door or a block away.
Some of my favorite dishes at Pasta?: the pasta al samone (pasta with salmon) in a nice tomato cream sauce, and the gniocci with pesto sauce.
Service is also great at Pasta?; the waiters are friendly and fast. Our waters were always filled and our waiter came back to ask how we were doing several times.

Mission College, located next to a gigantic movie theater and mini-mall complex, offers lots of great night school classes. Furthermore, it has plenty of parking so it's a great commuter school if you work during the day.
The selection of classes is great for a community college. If you want to take classes on foreign language, photography, computer programming, or even creative writing, you can do so at Mission College.
The instructors are great. Given that the silicon valley is one of the most educated places in the country, you'll find PhDs or Master Degree graduates teaching the courses here.
Signup is easy--they have a web based internet registration system where you can choose your courses online. Getting enrolled couldn't be more simpler.

Need a pair of running shoes and don't know which one to get? I had this problem and Metrosport helped solve my problem.
After running Bay to Breakers with a cheap pair of Asic running shoes, my feet hurt llike crazy. I went to Metrosport and the salesperson asked me to run to see which pair i should get.
He noticed that I overpronated and so i needed a pair of shoes with proper support. He recommend a pair of new balnce N764s ($69) and these shoes have been wonderful. I ran bay to breakers last year with these shoes and without hte pain.
Metrosport has a great selection, resonable prices (though not cheap, you do pay for the expertise), friendly salespeople, and folks that do know their product very well. This is a great running store who can help you pick out a pair of shoes that you need.

Keeble and Shuchat Photo, or K&S as many people call it, is one of Palo Alto's largest camera specialty stores. It has all you need--including even the most obscure odds and ends you don't.
I was looking for a place that sold cleaning swabs that let you clean the CCD sensor of a digital SLR camera. This is a VERY obscure product and very few camera stores have it. I tried calling nearly 10 camera stores before I found one (K&S) that carried this item. I was estactic!
The prices here are average. They don't have super deals on cameras like you can find on the web, but the items here aren't expensive and the store doesn't try to gouge you. The staff is knowledgable and very helpful. The prices here are definately fair.
Bottom line: the selection can't be beat, and the prices are resonable. A great local camera shop!

Hote Avante is located on El Camino Real and is near many silicon valley businesses, including Google, SGI, and even Yahoo!
It looks a bit ghetto from the outside but when you walk in, it looks distinctively botique. There is a nice wood paneled lobby and front desk. And if you walk in between the hours of five to seven pm, you'll find glasses of wine and beer sitting out for you during their weekday happy hour.
The rooms are nice and spacious, and all come with complimentary high-speed DSL internet access. The rooms were clean and well kept. The bedding was also soft and I was able to get a good nights rest before my business meeting the next day.
I recommend this hotel if you're a business traveler and need a good place to rest. It's not a vacation place--there isn't much of a pool, nor is there much to do around there. But it is a resonable place to crash and get work done.

California Cafe Bar & Grille is located near the Stanford Mall in a place informally known to Stanford Students as "the Barn"
The food is distinctively American, and many residents come here for the brunch.
One piece of advice: the crab cakes are great. They are on the breakfast menu (served all day), and they come with a abundant serving of eggs and toast. (Cost: $14)
They also have great burgers at the California Cafe too. The burger I ordered was cooked just right (medium well) and was huge and juicy. The fries were also great (crispy and not too well done)
Service is so-so. Our waters were filled frequently, but the food took a while to come out, and our server took a while to come take our order. It was a busy day when we went, and there should have been more wait staff hired. That said, I've had a great experience there and would recommend this place to anyone wanting to go for brunch.

I took a night school class on Beginning Photography at De Anza College.
The staff was friendly and the instructor was knowlegable. There is also plenty of parking at De Anza College (it's free after 5pm) so finding a spot for your car, especially if you commute, isn't difficult.
I found the class selection to be pretty good. There are a wide variety of classes you can take at night, ranging from introductury computer programming (C or C++) to a variety of foreign languages (chinese, spanish, french, and german, to name a few)
The photography class I took was well taught. We also had a well-stocked photo lab with all the developer, light machines, and tools you need.
Overall, a great place to learn--whether you're studying for a new career or just taking classes for fun.
