The Winchester Mystery House was built by the heiress to the Winchester gun fortune back in the 1800s. She was a huge nut and thought she was haunted by the crazy spirits of all the victims and people killed by Winchester rifles.
So she spent all this money to build this wacko house that has stairs leading up to nowhere, doors that open to brick walls or to thin air (beware of the drop!). The house is really crazy and quite cheesy.
Today it is a tourist attraction where anyone can pay their $16 and tour the house. There are guided tours that last about 1 hr. as well as a more expensive night tour (they call them "flashlight tours") that happen once every other week.

Merry Maids can help clean your place when you need it most--after a party, after construction--whatever you need they'll take care of it.
We had contracts recently work on our house and they left a huge mess. There was dust everywhere, and the bathrooms were simply filthy. It was a huge horrible mess.
We hired Merry Maids to come clean up the place. Five people showed up and they cleaned our house in less than two hours. Best of all, it cost us $75 for the cleaning, when it would have taken us 5 or 6 hours of our own time otherwise.
We were happy with their service and would highly recommend them.

The Hudson Hotel is a New York City landmark and is one of the more chic hotels in New York. It has several bars and a world-renowned cafe and restrauant (the Hudson Cafeteria). This is the place to be seen and to be seen as many hip New York City residents come to the hotel to hang out.
The rooms are spacious (by New York City standards) but also super-expensive if you don't use something like hotwire or priceline. Expect to pay over $200 for a "standard" room.
That said, the location is great. It's located in central Mid Town New York near Times Square on W 58th Street. There are plenty of cabs you can take to and from the hotel, and it's a near a subway station as well.

The Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts hosts many theater and musical performances. The shows here are generally run by local production companies, high schools, community colleges, and other groups.
The performances here range from mediocre to good. The theater and the performing arts center are actually nice facilities. The concessions are not bad either, but like all performing arts centers, the concessions are there to gouge you so it isn't cheap.
Parking is plentiful and normally isn't a problem. Parking is also free so that's a big plus.

Ski Renter is a small ski rental and tuning store on El Camino Real in Mountain View. It's a phenomenal place to get your skis tuned--I brought a pair in and they sharpened, it, tested it, waxed it, and checked to make sure the bindings were perfect all for about $30. They're super professional and highly knowledgable.
They also rent skis and snowboards rather inexpensively. You can get a pair of skis for about $10 per day and a snowobard for about $12 per day (2004-05 season). Note that ski resorts charge about $30 per day to rent so you get a great deal from the Ski Renter.
Ski Renter is especially convienient if you live in the Mountain View, Los Altos, or Palo Alto area and you're looking not to pay a lot to turn your skis or to rent a pair for the slopes.

Stanford University, know as an ivy-league-equal, is one of the top universities in the nation. Valedictorians come from all 50 states and over 50 nations to attend stanford.
That said, it's got a top notch NCAA Division 1 football and basketball team. Swimmers from their top ranked swim team go to the olympics. They have one of the fastest and most prestious cross-country teams in the nation, where many runners go to the olypmics too.
The facilities at stanford are world-class. The track here could double for an olympic track if the olympics were held in san francisco. The aquatic center, usable only if you're a student or facutly member, is also one of the best in the nation.

"The Haircut" is a barber shop located in the Stanford Mall, not surprising, next to stanford. It's always packed with Stanford students looking for a simple haircut, which will run you around $15 after tip and taxes.
If you're not looking for something fancy, "The Haircut" is a good place for you to go. The barbers here (more like random women with cosmotology licenses) will chop your hair off whatever way you want: using scissors, that shaver thing--you name it.
Either way, it's a reasonable deal, and great if you're a student without a car since it's right next to Stanford University.
