Dr. Moses and Dr. Thompson are a husband and wife team who run a small, capable veterinary practice in Washington Heights. After a horrible experience with another vet in the neighborhood, I gave them a shot and was delighted by the service, reception and treatment given to my cat. Unfortunately, they don't board, but the helpful staff of young women seemed to be constantly accomodating customer requests for petsitting, which is a nice alternative. Everyone seemed content at this place, even the animals, which makes a nice difference from the other neighborhood vet, which is dark and gloomy and depressing (and more expensive!). The vets themselves were professional but never condescending, gentle with my cat and happy to answer all my questions. I highly recommend taking your animals to them.

Zipper has a great atmosphere -- the window is different and inviting every time I walk by, and I can't pass without ducking in. The staff is chatty and helpful and recognize repeat customers. Great selection of funky art bags, books, as well as an alcove full of perfumed soaps and candles that are just out of the ordinary enough to be enticing. I always wander into Zipper ready to look -- I always leave sorry to not be able to buy up the whole place. A great place to snag gifts. They've got kids stuff and furniture too, but the whole place is blended into one big atmosphere of presentation that somehow comes together and creates a wonderful environment. I really enjoy visiting Zipper.

I got sucked in by Bird's cool signage as I was walking one day in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The shop has lots of great stuff -- jeans and shoes especially! The staff was pleasant but not judgemental or intrusive and let me browse in peace, which I appreciated. I've since gone back to Bird to buy gifts for my friends -- there are lots of wonderful options. While Bird doubtlessly caters to many young hip Brooklyn moms, nearby Baby Bird (same great signage) offers plenty of options for their little New Yorkers.

I was first taken Eidolon by a friend, who lives in the neighborhood and now shops there almost exclusively. The clothes are lovely, most of them all designed by the owner or local designers, so you are guaranteed something unique and original. A nice range of accessories as well, especially hats and jewelry. Definitely worth checking out if you're in Park Slope, Brooklyn -- this shop is a little treasure along "the other 5th Ave".

Knit New York is part yarn shop, part coffee shop, which makes an incredible amount of sense. Tucked away on 3rd ave just a few block east of Union Square, the cozy shop has a wonderful atmosphere, a great selection of beautiful yarns at competitive prices, and some great tea and coffee options. They offer classes as well, encouraging a community of young urban knitters. If you knit, don't miss this place!

My friend and I hunted down this knitting shop and were delighted that our hard work paid off -- this place is a wonderful shop for both inexperienced and seasoned knitters. It's a bit hard to find (odd location tucked away on an upper floor within the midtown junk district), but the doorman of the building was very helpful when we asked for directions ("Right upstairs -- just press 3 in the elevator!" he beamed). Once you stumble inside, you have reached a small but roomy shop filled wth amazing yarns and tools. Knitting projects are presented in funky and creative ways -- this is not your grandmother's yarn shop -- and the staff are hip, helpful and lots of fun. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get started learning to knit, as well as to experienced knitters looking to spice up their standard projects.

I am a young hip woman who happens to knit. This shouldn't seem so weird, right? Young celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts knit, after all -- it's not like it's exclusively a granny hobby anymore. Sigh. While a student at Parsons (right around the corner), I ducked into this knitting shop one cold day to pick up some needles. It's a second floor shop and they have to buzz you in, creating a members-only vibe from the get go. When I entered, the staff gave me the once over and then ignored me for the rest of my visit. They had some beautiful yarns and all the standard needles/sizes, but I received zero help from the indifferent staff. I couldn't help but notice that more traditionally maternal looking women in their forties and fifties were welcomed into the tiny shop with quite a different reception than I received. After my experience there, I'd only go back if I was desperate for some knitting supplies and happened to be in the area.

I ducked into this neighborhood pharmacy one day to buy some toothpaste and discovered this odd little gem of a pharmacy. Beyond the standard Duane-Reade-type fare, they have an entire wall of gift items like candles, t-shirts, glassware and unusual craft-style items, as well as hard to find items like AromaNaturals scent bags (tiny bags with peppermint and eucalyptus scented beads inside -- great for sniffing during the winter and an excellent non-sticky alternative to Vicks for keeping colds at bay). They also carry the full range of non-mainstream brands like Burt's Bees (a personal favorite of mine), which is great to find in the neighborhood (and saves me the haul downtown to Whole Foods). Technically a pharmacy, but really so much more.

I used to live near Nest and I got sucked in without fail every time I'd pass by. They have great home stuff, from funky Tord Boontje lighting to beautiful bedding to slick furniture pieces in the latest colors and styles. Very contemporary. Some children's stuff too. If you're in upper Park Slope, stop in and browse a little (though be warned, the hours always seemed kind of strange -- perhaps they've established a regular business schedule by this point... but best to call ahead and make sure they're open).

Animal General is a great veterinary environment -- my pets are never scared to go there or put off once they are inside. I have always been very happy with the vet services I've received there and the prices are competitive. The desk staff is friendly and helpful, and the vet is great with my cat. I recommend it as a great place to take any pet.
