SF Moma is one of the top museums in the country, if not the world, for good reason. They always have interesting and engaging exhibits. What I like most about the museum, however, is that it's very accessible. While there is plenty to see, you can pick and choose what to explore. The cafe is fine, albeit a bit pricey and don't forget to check out the great store.

Science museums are always great places to take kids and the Exploratorium is no exception. They have a wide range of exhibits that appeal to (and can be understood) all different age groups. I'm particularly impressed with their living plants/animals displays and some of the newer interactive/computer exhibits. I often find myself more interested well after the kid I'm with gets bored. Some of the displays are getting a little worn down and it would be nice to have more staff around to help talk about some of the displays, but you have to love any museum that encourages you to touch.

The Booksmith is a decent sized bookstore. It's the only one on the Haight, at least that sells new books. The staff is knowledgeable and not overly earnest like you'll find in some small stores. The offer a good mix of mainstream and less well know books. As with any independent bookstore, expect to pay a bit more compared to the big chains, but you'll be supporting a local business.

This small shop on Haight Street offers a wide selection of bags in all kinds of styles, brands, and sizes from this Brooklyn based company. I'm always amazed at their selection. In addition to the signature Yak Pak messenger bags, they also offer a number of other brands. Every time I pass by, it looks like they have something new.

You generally don't pay attention to the company when you get a cab since they all pretty much get you where you need to go. That being said, I find that I generally use Desoto. It started when I happened to program the number into my cell phone when I needed a cab, but then I kept calling them because they had my address tied in with their caller ID system. It's a little detail, but it's really convenient to just call them and they know where to pick me up. Someone generally comes within 5-10 minutes.

Shoreline is one of the better amphitheaters I've been to. It's a great place to see music. If you really like the band, I'd recommend reserved seating to insure a good view. Otherwise, the lawn is a fun place to hang out and enjoy music outside. If you do get lawn seats, be sure to bring a blanket and get there early to get a good seat. Getting there can be a bit of a hassle with the traffic and parking, which is another reason to get there early.

Many people consider this the best dim sum in the city. I haven't tried many other places in the city because I keep coming back to Ton Kiang because I know I'll always have a great meal. I always get a kick at the huge crowd waiting outside the restaurant on weekends. It's worth the wait, so plan accordingly. If you don't see what you're looking for, don't be afraid to ask for it. The staff is accomodating and the place is run pretty efficiently. It can seem a bit impersonal, but then again you are pointing at food being wheeled around in carts.

I don't understand why German food gets such a bad rap. Walzwerk is one of my favorite restaurants in the city because it serves great food and beer (of course). The space is pretty small and the food is served on mismatched dishes and silverware. The proprietors and staff are friendly. They also serve a vegetarian version of schnitzel, which is great alternative.

Whoever thought to put this bar and restaurant here was genius. Tucked right between the edge of the park and the beach, it's a great place to hang out on the chairs outside on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The food is better than their sister restuarant upstairs, but the service at both is lacking. This is definitely one of those spots where the location and setting is the draw. If you're not in a hurry, this is a great spot.

I had heard about the garlic noodles at this restaurant and they really did live up to their reputation. I kept thinking about those noodles for days after my first dinner there. While garlic noodles are a traditional side for crab, at Thanh Long it's the other way around. The crab, while good, is not as memorable as the noodles. The other dishes are flavorful, but otherwise unremarkable. This place is all the way out by Ocean Beach, but it's worth the trip.
