Viva Health is a local health care insurance provider that is a part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System. While different levels of service are offered, Viva is widely accepted in Alabama by most every physician who takes Blue Cross. They provide excellent coverage at almost 1/2 the cost of Blue Cross premiums. Their customer service has so far been very helpful. The main issue that you can run into is care outside of Alabama. While Viva will cover ER visits and hospitalizations at non-Viva hospitals, the copays will be more. Also, non-Viva primary care facilities will not be covered. However, if you don't do much traveling outside of the state, the money you save each month on your premiums will certainly outweigh the increased premiums for the ER visits you have to have while you are traveling.

Briarcliff, located in English Village in Mountain Brook, is a quaint little store that caries decorative items for the home. Most of the items are in the style of old cottage/tutor homes, so do not expect anything hip or contemporary. They carry some furniture (tables and dressers) and also some lighting fixtures. Their prices are fairly reasonable and the staff is courteous.

We had been taking our cat to see the Indian Springs Animal Clinic until we moved a bit too far away for us to conveniently still go there. The staff there is very friendly and truly cares about the animals. When my mother's baby kitten was very ill, many of the staff members offered to take the kitten home with them to care for her. The vet is very nice and knowledgeable. If they weren't too far away, we'd still be going there.

Andy's Farm Market is located in Vestavia on Rocky Ridge Road. While a small store, they have most of the staple fruits and vegetables that you would want. Their foods are fresh from the farm, and you can definitely tell the difference in the quality between Andy's foods and grocery stores. They only carry seasonal items, and thus are closed during the winter. The prices for the fresh foods are also usually the same price or cheaper than big grocery stores.

We went to Levy's for the first time after hearing many friends say good things about them. We were very impressed with the quality and price of the jewelry. They custom make some of their own jewelry that are exquisite. The staff was very friendly and not pushy. Their prices are also very reasonable and negotiable. Don't think the price that the tag has is the price you should pay.

This not-so-well-known landscaping store is located behind the Parnell's Furniture store in Hoover. I think many contractors and professional landscapers know about this place, but they also serve the general public as well. After being greeted by the owner's dogs, you can browse their large selection of small or large river rocks or stepping pavers. If you've brought your truck with you, you can load up on pine straw or pine bark. Since they deal mostly with professional landscapers, stuff isn't bundled or packaged like they are at Home Depot/Lowes. You have to have a truck to transport the stuff. If you've got the transportation, you can get a lot of landscaping material for a very inexpensive price.

Myer's, located in Pelham, is a fine little nursery that carries nice plants and landscaping materials. They have an excellent selection of hanging plants. They have very knowledgable staff that are very helpful. They also have a wide variety of ceramic and terra cotta planters. They also have some landscaping rocks; however, unless you need only a few, I would try a rock quarry since their prices are fairly expensive. The prices on their plants are very reasonable and just a few dollars more than the larger chain stores.

Located in the Riverchase Galleria, Spa Japonika seems like it would offer high quality spa treatments. However, on a recent visit to get a pediacure, I was very disappointed. My spa technician spent the whole time gossiping with her co-worker and did not provide all of the services that were promised by their brochure. The spa environment were not relaxing at all as the manicure/pedicure area is loud and crowded. While I can give an opinion on their massage services, I would not spend my money at Spa Japonika for a massage based my pedicure experience.

Surin West is a staple restaurant of Birmingham and of South Side. The restaurant serves up wonderful Thai food. The best dishes are the coconut soup, Wing of Angel (glazed chicken stuffed with a shrimp based stuffing), and the Super Crunch sushi. I would highly recommend the Super Crunch for all of the non-sushi people. It has no raw food and everyone who hates the thought of sushi and who tries it ends up loving it. The lunch menu is fairly cheap and offers quick food of the more popular dishes. One con, however, is that their staff is not always the most friendly. Definitely try it out if you haven't.

We adopted our cat from the Shelby Humane Society and just love our cat. The Shelby Humane Society has (unfortunately) a large collection of cats and dogs for people to adopt. When you adopt a cat, the cat is spade or neutered and has his/her rabies shot. They also give you a month's worth of pet health insurance. There is a nominal fee to adopt a pet. If you must get a cat, please adopt one from a humane society. Shelby Humane Society has nice facilities and is an excellent place to adopt a new friend.
