the food is also really good. it's a sandwich cafe with a tiny bit of gourmet flair. the "grateful bread" is a personal favorite--it's turkey, cranberry mayo and dressing on whole wheat bread. SO Tasty.
the best thing about 903 Mills is the outdoor atmosphere. it's a great place to hang for hours. I love it. It's probably one of my favorite things about my neighborhood. It's also one of the best places to peoplewatch in the city.
they also have really good dinner specials in the evening.

One of the things about our neighborhood that I love is our proximity to Momm's Meats and Popp's Produce.
The store has a home-town feel to it, but also has very very good prices. We find the quality of their produce consistently outshines the chain supermarkets and much of it seems to come from area farmers. We've noticed the sweet potatoes, watermelon and onions all seem to be significantly better than what we've found elsewhere.
The staff is very multicultural and seems to like each other and pass the day well together. They are usually laughing about something together.
The meat shop is as high a quality or better than you could expect from a grocer, but at better prices. I've been surprised by the quality of their cheap steak, and we usually buy their small whole chickens to bar-b-que. One word about the chicken--check as much as possible for broken bones--they seem to have a problem with this happening a lot.

I think that I've saved several days time in trips to Lowe's and Home Depot by frequenting this small shop. The store is small enough that finding things is a snap, and the staff is quick to offer help (and for how young they are, they're surprisingly able to help.) Their selection is pretty comprehensive, but if you're looking for just the right light fixture or faucet set, I'd start somewhere else. If you're looking to replace a gasket, or some kind of weird-looking bolt you've never seen before, this is THE place to be.
There's seldom a line, and only a very small parking lot (which is rarely full) so getting in and out is quick. I find their prices to be very reasonable.
One of my favorite things about Ace Hardware is being able to fill a propane tank there for $12. That's three or four dollars less than exchanging a tank at Walmart.
I also like the "real hardware store" feeling of Ace. Kind of takes you back.

A friend shared this place. Since he did it's been hard to go a month without stopping by for a bowl of their "Special Duck Soup" at least once a month.
If you've not had Vietnamese food, you've missed a treat. Fresh purple basil, cilantro, crunchy bean sprouts, blazing green jalapenos and broths richly flavored with cardamom, anise and ginger... This is great stuff.
Anh Hong is my favorite place to go for Vietnamese--I'm not sure that it's the best--but no one else has their duck soup. This stuff is so good that it's ridiculous.
Their pho (beef broth soup) is also quite good. (I'd avoid meats called tendon or navel unless you're sure that you want to be brave.)
Also their Summer rolls are delicious. Try the "Anh Hong Roll"
Finish off by sharing a fresh coconut. They chop off the top and fill it with shaved ice. It's delicious.
Park in the back.

There are a lot of attractive things about Tires Plus--clean waiting areas, salespeople who are good communicators, often fast turnaround of your vehicle. Still, after a couple years of using them exclusively for our vehicle repairs, we've decided not to go back. Here's why: every time you take your vehicle to them they do a run-down of it and find several hundred dollars in additional "repairs" or maintenance treatments that will ramp up the cost of a simple repair. I feel that we were taken advantage of several times--for more than five hundred dollars--before catching on.
I feel that it's unfortunate that they prey on customers--especially women-- who will trust their expertise and pay for unnecessary work.

The owner is a kind old man--he's very open to bargaining and fun to talk to.
This is the kind of place that I find myself going back to--it's so full of stuff, that you know you'll see something new every time you go.

My favorite part of this store is the wall of kitchen gadgets and doo-dads. There's a ton of fun stuff here and it's all very cheaply priced. (The owner is receptive to hagglers, though.)
There are also tons of retro electronics, lamps, racks of horrible clothing, some tools, toys, games, videos and near the door some shelves of strange looking vegetarian canned meat substitute.
The owner (or the lady who I assume is the owner) is usually there and quite friendly--but a little spooky in her done-up hair and thick makeup.

I had my ears pierced and gauged at Exotica. The staff does observe strict standards with heigene and really know what they're doing with ANY kind of piercing.
They also have several artisans who can craft any piece of stainless or gold jewelry for piercing. The fit and finish of their in house jewelry is extremely good.
I can recommend one of their tattoo artists strongly because of the work he's done on friends. Nico's tattoo's are really perfect. His work always pops and just oozes style. I recommend that you have him do anything that you want done.
The environment is adult only--as mentioned by Faith. They have, however cleaned it up a lot, and even slapped a fresh coat of paint on it.

Palmano's is a great place if you're looking for high quality (rich and sweet) espresso. They roast their own beans and have great coffee, latte and cappucinos as well. There is a good selection of snacks and pastries, and a nice outside seating area. (There are also fans)
Inside the bar, the quarters are a little crammed with just a couple places to sit, and at times you want to ask the staff if they should be in school, but they do a great job and are friendly and attentive.
They also have a selection of fine roasted coffees on hand from various origins. Prices are reasonable.
