Doogie’s is seriously one of my favorite “restaurants” in the world – the perfect mix of “fast food” and “real food”. The clam role is greasy perfection, and they even serve fried dough (you don’t have to wait for the local fair to get some!). The draw here is the “two-foot hot dog” (seriously!) but you must try “the works” burger – it’s the best “fast food” burger I’ve ever eaten!

This is a great place if you feel like a late breakfast or a cup of coffee & pastry late-night. The menu is extensive (as in, difficult to make a choice there are so many options!) and the choices are traditional diner-food, with a Greek twist (gyros and baklava alongside burgers & pie). A fun place to meet people for brunch or a late night chat.

This is a great family run Mexican restaurant on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington. I love Mexican food anyway, but this is especially good – its kind of a mix between “traditional Mexican” and the “tex-mex” stylings Americans are used to. For example, they serve both chicken mole (traditional) and fajitas (tex-mex) – and both dishes are equally yummy!

This local bar changes its name every few years (you may remember 4-Play, among others), but it’s still the same old local hangout/ sports bar. Newington folks joke that any given day is a High School Class of ____ Reunion, and that’s pretty much the truth – especially around Thanksgiving/ Christmas – time. Good pub food, strong drinks, fun atmosphere - what more is there?

Steve’s is the kind of place that everybody in town goes to after the local high school football game. The food is great but the atmosphere is better – you’re always sure of running into one of your neighbors, and the owner remembers your name even years later. Try the meatball sub or the eggplant parm – yum!

Whether you are in the mood for sushi or bim bim bap – this restaurant is the place to satisfy those Asian food cravings! They even have raw beef on the menu – something I hadn’t seen in a Korean restaurant outside of New York. This Korean food is healthy and hearty – lots of veggies and a bit of beef to tide you over – yum!

Newington Pizza is an institution in this town. It’s not the type of place to bring a hot date, but it is the best traditional pizza around. Normally my fiancé likes to load his pizza up with toppings, but even he agrees when ordering from Newington Pizza it’s best to get the plain – it’s just so darn good there’s no point in obscuring it with a ton of toppings.

This is a great little bar in Elmwood that has an amazing array of beer on tap – even Harp’s (mmmm….Harp’s). Their food is also yum, and is modeled after the English/Irish style “pub grub” – the Irish Nachos (made with fresh potato chips and strong Irish cheddar) are particularly good! Also try the half & half pint – half Harp’s, half Guinness – all good!

I was a member of this theater troupe as a kid. It was great opportunity to have fun and meet kids from different towns – we auditioned, rehearsed, and traveled the state performing. I wasn’t very good (ok, I was awful) – but that didn’t matter much, I still had fun in the “chorus” and it kept me out of my parents’ hair for large chunks of time.

If you’re looking to change it up, and sick of the same old dinner/ movie dates, the bowl-a-rama is the way to go. It’s really so much fun, and worth a few laughs seeing your date/ friends fall all over themselves trying to get the ball down the lane! My only complaints would be the stinky shoes (bring your own!) and greasy food (and I like grease!).
