The Italian Community Center is located one block east of Columbia street in little Italy. The building they inhabit used to be a church. The staff there are very approachable and willing to engage in conversation (Italian if you can keep up with them). My girlfriend and I took Italian 1 there and had a blast! There was a casual environment and it was very inexpensive. The class size was very manageable (about 10 students) and we left knowing most of the basics.

Looking for a rare Frank Zappa, Bob Dylan, Bjork, Metallica, Segovia...these guys at Cow have it all. Owned by two really cool musical guys, you are bound to find what you want and get a great deal too. Since the owners are usually working, they are great at giving you special deals for shopping at their store. There is a lot of vinyl in this store, and a huge 99 cent section. I have found some rare finds here at a third of the price you would pay in San Francisco or New York for the same product.

Hodad's Burgers is directly across the street from The Black on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. Second only to Rocky's in pacific Beach, Hodad's has an amazing burger. Try the cheeseburger basket. It comes with fries and a drink. These guys are also good at ice cream shakes and malts. The real kind of malts that come with the extra portion. You need a spoon to eat them because they are too thick for a straw. Covered with old license plates, the walls are part of the appeal. Or you can sit inside an old VW bus and eat. Must try this place!

The Red Fox. The name says it all. This well kept secret is perfect for those late night steak cravings. The food here is excellent, and the atmosphere is unparalleled. Most bars like this are coined "Star Bars" for the wide variety of strange folks that end up there. The drinks are stiff and the Bartenders will make you feel at home. Half of the Red Fox is a piano bar, and the other half is the restaurant. You don't want to miss the show, as most of the crowd takes their turn singing their favorite sinatra song.

This is the only real video store I have been to in San Diego. Family owned and operated, this video store is packed to the ceiling with the largest selection of movies around. The staff is very knowledgeable, and very willing to assist you in locating that special film. There is a large selection of foreign and adult movies also, for those occasions. The video store is right next to the Ken theater on Adams avenue. membership is $10 for life, and movies are $2.50.

This theater has been around before most of us were! There is a lot of history in this theater. Similar to the Ken theater in Kensington, this theater shows small films, independent films, and occasionally some live music. In the heart of encinitas, this theater also has it's share of surf films. In the olden days there were couches and booths in the theater for the special patrons. The trend continues with beer being served for live performances, and beautiful architecture. Stop by La Paloma to pick up a movie listing and make a night of it.

Wow, there was some cool stuff in this store, but I thought I was at Nordstrom's when I looked at the price tags. Similar to Buffalo Exchange (and directly across the street) these guys are very selective with what they place on the racks. I see them rifle through bags of clothing that people bring in to sell, and usually send them away with purchasing nothing. There is a vibe of "everyone is a shoplifter". These guys watch you like you are a criminal. Bring your credit card, because you may not have the cash in your purse/wallet.

If you haven't been to this landmark club, you have been missing out. This venue has been the stage for thousands of national acts and performances. The Casbah is the top of the food chain when it comes to inspiring artists and an artist centric venue. People go to the Casbah for the music, which is rare in San Diego. Most nights include three to four bands. The stage is surrounded by upholstered walls that make the sound on stage favorable for the musicians and patrons. This is a must for any music lover, and yes, this is a full bar!

These guys were very helpfull. Not only could they arrange stage and lighting for a large venue, but they also had any instrument available for rental. I was arranging a show for some jazz musicians from out of town. In order to play, they needed special instruments and amplifiers. I was able to rent a vintage Hoffner beatle bass and a flip-top Ampeg bass amplifier! The show was a success, and the price was right. These guys have everything from DJ setups to microphones to Mboxes. Check them out.

Think you know the best burger place in town? Well, this unsuspecting bar off the beaten path in Pacific Beach is by far the best in San Diego. The only thing on the menu (which is actually a chalk board behind the bar) are burgers and fries. This is a local hangout for the old salties of PB. With sports always on the televisions, and the same two bartenders always working, it is a consistent treat for the burger lover. Be prepared to wait for you burger, it is made to order. Cash only at this establishment.
