Pacific Drive Skateboards has been around for quite a while. Growing up in Pacific Beach, there were only a couple good skate shops. I have shopped here for years, but my last experience was the most memorable. I needed to pick up a skateboard for my cousin's birthday. I was able to choose a deck, the trucks, wheels, bearings and have them assemble it in under 8 minutes. I also purchased a skatebaord tool which was still within my budget for the entire bill.

In the heart of Ocean Beach on Newport Avenue lives one of the biggest antique stores I have ever seen. I went in to find a snuff bottle for my grandfather, who has a taste for rare collectibles. I was proud to have found such a gem for his collection. There were plenty to choose from, and the price was very reasonable. My girlfriend went crazy over the lamps and retro furniture. With the high volume of antique shops in Ocean Beach, the selection was surprisingly broad. For the person on your list who only appreciates unique gifts, don't miss this place!

That's right! I had an old tattoo covered up by these professionals at Avalon. I, like lots of silly people, made some mistakes in my childhood. One mistake was my first tattoo. Not only did it mean nothing, it was very "not cool". I went in to Avalon and showed them the tattoo I wanted covered and the new piece I desired in it's place. They scheduled me an appointment (for a $20 down payment), and took the picture I brought in home. The day of my appointment the artist had a rough draft of what he was prepared to do. The process was almost painless (the tattoo was not painless, just the process). Highly recommended!

What a great idea! Every month the Museum Of Contemporary Art holds an event called "Thursday Night Thing" or TNT. In addition to showing a theme based movie on a large screen outside, they have live music on a stage they also setup in the courtyard. Each event has a drink sponsor which hosts the bar, with a charge of course. This is a great event to meet artsy folks, and to view the current exhibits at the museum. Directly across from the old Santa Fe train station, this event is alive with the vibe of downtown San Diego. Check it out!

After running around town searching for the perfect pair of wrist guards, I ended my search with the exact item I needed. Road Runner sports has been around for a while, and they have a great selection of sporting goods. While shopping for wrist guards to protect me while snowboarding, I also found a cool pair of tennis shoes, a punching bag and a weight bench, all at reasonable prices. The coyote can't catch up with this road runner. Definitely check it out if you are in the market for sporting goods at a great discount.

The name says it all. I have been getting my hair styled at this location for the last 8 years. Once you find someone who can actually cut hair correctly, it is hard to go anywhere else. This was one of those places. Some of the hairstylists are salaried employees and some rent a space from the owner. The walls are covered with paintings and photos from local and non-local artists. There are many from New Orleans based artists. Great place for a cut and style!

My experience at 5th Avenue book store was a positive one. While I did not find the book I was after, I did enjoy my visit. Maybe it was the location of the store, but the customers and employees were all very friendly and eager to assist me. I spent an hour just in the spiritual book section reading snippets of each authors work. There was no pressure to buy anything, and it seemed more like a casual environment than regular book stores. I would recommend this to anyone in the area (or not).

The Golden Seashell is located on Newport Beach nestled in between all of the Antique stores. I have had many pieces crafted here. I had them replicate a Sicilian horn in white gold which they did a marvelous job of. I have also bought white gold chains that have lasted forever. Most recently I had them resize a couple rings for me. My only advice is to have them weigh the ring before and after this service. I brought in a large gold ring for sizing, they sized it down and I did not get the gold they removed. My fault for not having them weigh in advance.

While attempting to purchase a skateboard for my younger brother, I encountered a bunch of ego, and very little knowledge. There was a young guy assisting me, and he treated me like I knew nothing (not in a helpful way, but in a know-it -all way). I am 33 and have been skating when this kid was in diapers. Muir street is in the tweaker part of Ocean beach (near the old Dago Choppers location that was burned down by an arson). I recommend going to a reputable store like Hamels verses trying to help out a small business (unless they treat you like a person).
