Growing up in Allentown meant having a few local traditions, one of which was going to the fish hatchery to feed the giant pools of fish. It is nothing grand or spectacular, but I give it a great review for the childhood memories. A lot of people like to stroll by to enjoy the natural grounds and peer at the fish displayed at different phases of development. The sad part is during fishing season when each release into the creek is attended by hoards of sport fishermen waiting for the unsuspecting catch.

La Mirada provides a beautiful large community of apartment homes with frequent breezes brushing through tall trees and patches of colourful flowers. Gated parking is available for tenants, ,and there is plenty of outdoor parking for visitors. Several community jacuzzis are perfect for entertaining a small gathering of friends. There are also multiple lap pools for swimming. The apartments are quite standard, though the washer and dryer are strangely situated so that you must walk all the way through the kitchen to do laundry.

These are one of the few sets of building around La Jolla that still display some character in their presentation. While everything else seems to be painted some dull variation of dirt, Las Flores remains true with its white exteriors and blue tile trim. Parking is not great, with the outdoor spaces way too small for most modern cars to fit well, and close quartered garages, though tenants do have the benefits of gated parking. The landscaping is very natural, and the units simply organized but sufficient.

Regents apartments certainly fall into the category of luxury living. I am not a fan of the hotel like feeling of the complex, but they certainly do take good care of their tenants. Every community feature possible is available, including a movie theatre room that can be signed out to view your favourite DVD on a large projection screen TV. The office personnel are ever courteous and always willing to help should you need any assistance. It all depends on whether you want to pay the big dollars for your luxury lifestyle.

While on the generally more expensive side, renting at Valentia Apartments is still very appealing. The floor plan that particularly caught my attention is the three bedroom with loft. The mater bedroom is amazing, with vaulted ceilings and luxury bathrooms that boast a jacuzzi tub in addition to a shower and two sinks. This is dream living as far as apartments go!

Generously sized apartments are a draw at La Regencia, but small parking spaces and unnatural overly concrete surroundings tend to keep me a bit at bay. It is like living in a hotel, from the dizzying carpet patterns in the hallways to the grounds landscaping and the way the pools are set up. Gated entry works for the cars most times, but people on foot can reach through the fence and open the locked gate by its inside handle. The administration is not very friendly to people or pets.

The interiors of Nobel Court apartments are pleasant enough, but not as much can be said about the rest of the complex. Gated first floor entries into all the buildling create a sense that you are living in a very dangerous area. My first thought when I visited was that it is reminiscent of apartments in the bad parts of New York City. The elevators make frightening noises and have not been properly inspected in ages, not to mention they are too small to fit any large pieces of furniture that you must then drag up the staircases to reach upper story apartments.

A large number of people in my graduate program live in La Jolla Del Sol, and it is quite the fun intellectual community. Because it is open to non-students, the people there represent a more real world population than the other graduate student housing complexes. The pool and tennis court facilities are fun, though tenant cars must park outside. The gated community aspect provides a bit of extra security, but that and the limited parking are rather inconvenient for visitors.

Not many places in La Jolla are very pet friendly, but this is the only one I've found that welcomes dogs as well as cats. It's great to see a whole community of people who love their four legged friends, even if that means sometimes watching your step and not lying in the grass. In truth, though, everyone seems to be very responsible in cleaning up after their dogs, and there are designated gravel areas with plastic bags and disposal bin provided to meet their daily needs. There seem to be some outdated plumbing problems, but maintenance is quick to respond, and tenant cars are safer in remote control gated garages.

A couple years ago, I rented a one bedroom apartment in this complex, and it was definitely worth the splurge to live alone for a while! My unit opened to a quaint little courtyard with lush green grassy hills, tall shady trees, and community barbecue grills. My visitors had a lot of barbecue that year! Maintenance was extremely quick to respond to requests, and the office staff were very professional. The community clubhouse was a nice treat, with cookies and tea available for the tenants. The negative part was my car got stolen from the ungated parking garage. I think security has been increased since then.
