A favourite from my college days to current working days, The Flame Broiler is a little take out counter with a simple but delicious menu. When I first visited, the options were beef or chicken, bowls or plates, with or without green onions. Now you can choose vegetarian options, all white meat, short ribs, kids' meals, or a smaller bowl size. My coworkers and I joke that they must put something addicting in their teriyaki because we actually get Flame Broiler cravings. Luckily, their service is usually quite fast, but definitely call ahead if you are in a big hurry, because the line can get ridiculously long at lunchtime.
My usual order there is a chicken bowl with green onions, to which I add extra little containers of teriyaki and hot sauce and a side of jalapenos. My boyfriend usually has the larger beef plate with onions. He also likes the short ribs, but be aware that sometimes they run out of those later in the day.

I am very serious when I say Old Fisherman's Grotto has the best clam chowder I have ever tasted, and I have tasted a lot of chowders. Located on Monterey's fisherman's wharf, they first lured me in with a free sample outside the restaurant. From there, you can either purchase a container to go or sit down in their restaurant for comfortable dining with an ocean view. Their largest order of chowder is served in a giant shell shaped bowl and is definitely a hefty meal on its own. I have never gotten past it to try anything else. If you haven't had enough by then, you can bring a few cans home with you, or order them online later.

The motto of Grand Palace is "A place for all occasions" which translates to dim sum, lunch, dinner, and banquets. Like most other Chinese restaurants, the atmosphere is loud and busy, and gold luck symbols decorate the back wall. We met here for a reunion of a old family friends in the company of tasty traditional Chinese cuisine. We had an interesting hike up one of San Francisco's hills to get there, but it was worth the effort.

I have never been to the River's End restaurant myself, but it is a definite stop on my next trip to northern California. We missed that part of highway one on our last road trip, but my uncle who regularly rides his motorcycle down from Vancouver never fails to stop there. He swears that Jenner is the most beautiful stop between San Francisco and Canada. You can check their menus online before committing to an elegant evening of fine dining with a breathtaking ocean view.

Cannon Beach is a beautiful little seaside town, and along with the quiet atmosphere comes this amazing little shop on the edge of its tourist area. It is one of those elegant stores where you lower your voice and maneuver carefully because the displays are so delicate. The whole store is filled from top to bottom with crystals, glass sculptures, and wall art. My absolute favourite things there were the round moon jellyfish paperweights and delicately shaped glass octopi. Prices are quite high so I will have to wait on purchasing, but it is all definitely at least worth a look.

I came across The Old Crab walking down the main shopping street in Seaside, an arbitrary stop on a road trip up the west coast. There is not much in Seaside, but the ocean views are spectacular, and it is always fun to wander in and out of the little tourist shops. This is definitely one of the larger stores, with endless collectible inventory to boggle your mind. Some of the things that stood out in my mind were colourful stained glass panels, intricate model ships, and beautiful dragon displays.

Dooger's Seafood and Grill was right next to our hotel in Seaside as our last road trip brought us through Oregon. It is also located on the main shopping street around, so it was a natural place to stop and eat in the evening as the shops began to close their doors. The interior is very much like your average seafood restaurant, with various sea creatures and maritime decorations hanging on the walls. Be sure to try their delicious chowder, and maybe pick up a Dooger's t-shirt as a souvenir.

Those of you who have read my other posts probably know that I am not vegan myself, but that does not mean that I don't support those who advocate such a lifestyle change. I first encountered Action for Animals outside a fair by the Seattle Space Needle, where I bought a ocean conservation pin from them. They will send a free vegan starter pack to help people who have decided to make the change.

Duke's Chower House is one of my favourite restaurants in Seattle. Located on Lake Union in Chandler's Cove, there are places to park for people coming by car of by boat. I usually go when the other shops are closed, but Duke's is always worth the trip for its delicious food and live music. They also have a full bar if you would like a good drink. Try their chowder sampler to discover your all time favourite.

Torrefazione Italia is a beautiful cafe tucked to one side of Seattle's Pioneer Square. They offer delicious looking paninis, coffee, tea, and other baked goods, but what drew in my group of road trip travelers was the gelato! Served in cute little flower shaped cups with coloured spoons, it is the perfect thing to eat on a warm summer day as you wander around Pioneer Square.
