Fumari is a great place and an alternative to the coffeehouse culture. You can rent a hookah (a communal water-chilled tobacco pipe) by the house with some of Fumari's flavored tobaccos. Some of the better ones are Double Apple, Mango, and Rose Flower. They are located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter so they are walkable from Horton Plaza and they have comfortable chairs to lounge on. It's a great place to kick back and unwind after work or to study.

Large selection of women's wedgies 1940s shoes, men's suits and vintage ties. They focus mostly on 1930s through 1950s clothing with some 60s-80s mixed in. If you like clothes of the 70s and 80s this is the place for you. Prices are average to moderately high and they have a large selection of women's clothes and accessories and a smaller selection of men's attire. Most everything is synthetic fabric, but you can find some neat Guayabera shirts, or cheesy mariachi outfits here. They have a good selection of trendy belts, but unless you are into the clothes of the era this one isn't worth your time.

Wear It Again Sam's usually has a yearly sale, but beware they hide all of their good clothes and bring out the less desirable stuff from storage. They have clothes of varying condition, but specialize in 1940s and 1950s clothing both for men and women. The staff is fairly knowledgable about the clothing of the era and they sell accessories like vintage neckties, shoes and hats. Prices are a little higher than average, but the selection is generally very good.

The owner is credited with discovering Tom Waits and also putting on the yearly Adams Ave Roots Music Festival. His record store is more a comprehensive library of early blues, jazz, swing and country music. The owner is like a walking encyclopedia of musical knowledge and any obscure or rare vinyl or 78 rpm record can be found in this tiny shop. The only trouble is it is difficult to navigate the store as there are piles of vinyl everything. Also nothing is priced, and they will tell you the price for the records when you check out.

With a tag line of "Adventures in Bathing", Shwoomp is a unique store with a retro feel. They feature all natural bath and body care products. They also have scented candles, facial products and sunscreens. They have tons of free samples and a knowledgeable staff. Prices are a little high and I usually end up just window-shopping, but many of the items in the store are private label and make great original gifts. I respect this store as it is a small start up company in a high-traffic area dominated by chain stores.

Celadon does what many other restaurants fail to do. Offer a romantic restaurant in an upscale urban setting with consistently high quality food and excellent service at low to moderate prices. Celadon has a lot of authentic Thai specialties all around $6-12 for dinner prices and lunch is even cheaper. Their appetizers are very good, especially the "fresh spring rolls" with Thai peanut dipping sauce. The roast duck red curry is amazing, and all spicy dishes can be ordered by a 1-10 scale of spiciness. The atmosphere is casual yet upscale and the dining room is very romantic.

It's cheaper than, but not as good as Bronx Pizza [the most authentic New York style pizza in San Diego] However, they have a diverse menu of non-pizza items -- Stromboli's, and killer Italian pastries. Quality is hit or miss, pizzas tend to be under-done and doughy/soggy in the middle. But they are pretty large for the money. This is the home of the best cannoli in San Diego! They also have zeppoles and offer free delivery within a few miles radius with a minimum order.
