The last exhibit we saw at the San Diego Museum of Art was the Grandma Moses exhibit. Even though I previously had no interest in her folk art works, the museum presents her pieces in such a way the observer feels compelled to be involved with the artist's work. The museum is very large, encompassing several stories of different eras from modern to renaissance. The museum offers discounts if you sign up for an annual membership or have a student affiliation.

This museum features mostly 13th-century altarpieces, and 18th-century portraits to 19th-century still lifes. They have a fairly large collection but most of the artists you've never really heard of. It is adjacent to the San Diego Museum of Art, which is the city's flagship art repository, so it pales in comparison. But if you happen to be in Balboa Park the Timken is definitely worth a look and a bit of your time.

What better way to kick off the weekend than to dig through other people's junk! Kobey's Swap Meet is probably San Diego's largest swap meet, and it takes place in the parking lot of the San Diego Sports Arena. Shopper's admission is $1 and seller's admission is usually around $10-20 for an unreserved spot. There are regular sellers here who hawk CDs and DVDs, beef jerky and matchbox cars, but the real finds are in the last aisles which are the individual sellers. Everything from furniture and electronics to clothes and collectibles.

This place is billed as a low/no carb cafe, but in truth almost everything here is sugar-free. They have some incredible pastries that will rival anything you'll see at Starbucks and most of them are made with soy or sugar-alternative. I usually don't like sugar substitute items, but I tried some and I was pleasantly surprised. The cafe has a nice eat-in area and an outdoor patio. They have a huge selection of cakes, custards and more. They also serve beverages as well.

City Lights is one of those unique stores that you can't help but browse around inside. They carry tons of porcelain collectibles -- if you are into Department 56, Dickens Village, Annalee and such this is the place to get authorized accessories and pieces. The only drawback is they don't carry any of the Lemax line (Spookytown - Halloween, or the Christmas Village pieces).

Reuben H Fleet is one of the only Imax theaters in Southern California. They frequently rotate their movies and have the necessary cheesy "Pink Floyd" and other rock laser concerts. In the exhibit hall they have themed interactive science experiments. Even people who don't want to read through the cards to find out what they are about will be entertained. The hall is fairly large and is multistory, and there are enough exhibits to keep you entertained for at least 2 hours.

Point Loma Nazarene is a Christian University [I'm not Nazarene, however] that offers a large selection of majors including Philosophy, Communications, Sociology and Nursing. Their baseball team is highly ranked, and they have very small class sizes. You will find a lot of personal attention from the professors, and most will give you their personal contact information (i.e. home phone number) and be willing to meet with you outside class for additional tutoring, and assistance.

Cakes are handmade in the "Old World Style" and the amount of fillings and flavors is endless. The staff here pay real attention to detail on the creation of their cakes. It is a perfect place to get your wedding cake (they offer a free single layer cake on your anniversary) and birthday cakes. A great alternative to the grocery store sheet cake.
