A 99 Cent Store just opened up a year ago a couple blocks from where I live and we've gone there quite a bit for last minute items or cheap products that are better off getting there than at say Target.
The store is kept fairly clean when I go there...no more of a mess than any other store I've gone to. And I like that you can get a lot of things on the cheap such as a small laundry basket, baby wipes or ice cube trays. Even most of the foods there are fine to get but beware of the quality of these products...many of them are in this store for a reason. Either they are very close to or way past the expiration date and they just simply are not the best quality product out there. We purchase some teriyaki sauce there once and within a couple months it had fermented into this awful alcoholic teriyaki sauce. LOL I've also seen candy there from Christmas during Easter time!
At the store I go to they simply don't care much about customer service, at least the managers don't. The last two times I've gone there I've found one poor cashier handling a line of 5 or more people. When the cashier calls for help the manager finally came to the register and said basically "sorry, we don't have anyone to help". Well, the manager himself should have done something. :P
Like many cheap products at the 99 Cent Store, you get what you pay for.

I'm not the kinda girl that jumps into wacky hairstyles...although I wish I had the nerve to just once. I want a simple style, nothing fancy. I find a picture in a magazine and I show the hairstylist what I want. I don't know how else to explain what I want. Supercuts doesn't screw up my hair or anything, they try, I know it's hard to get it just right. What bothers me is that the last couple times I've gone there AND the last couple times my husband has gone there we don't have a great experience. Fifteen dollars doesn't sound like that much money, but we live with our hair every day...and for me I need to feel good about it. As for my experience, they would in the past give me a spray, a cut and blow it dry. The last couple times they would forget about the blow dry, I guess I need to pay an extra $5? My husband has had worse problems. He keeps his hair short and he has thick hair and he is never going bald so when it gets long it's a hassle for him. So when he got a cut it would be left too long in the front or he was literally left looking like a cone head with the shape of his hair one time. The only consolation was that they happily agreed to have him come back in for a fix. We still felt the need to tip them again but it was the thought that counts. The only reason he is going there again is because he gets a free haircut next time. Sounds like that Seinfeld episode with Elaine eating the awful sandwiches just to get that free one. LOL
Maybe this is just my experience but I would like to find another place to go for my next hair cut.

If anyone has read my Johnnie's pizza review, this is the same way I feel about Luke's. They are barely noticeable when you pass them but I suppose if they were more noticeable they'd be way too busy! I'm from Chicago and in my opinion Luke's hands has the best hot dogs in in Phoenix. They are made from scratch, not out of the package and you just have to have all the traditional Chicago Style toppings on them. They come with crinkle cut fries fresh and hot. Luke's doesn't have a huge menu but what they have they know they are good at making. They have all traditional Chicago foods. Italian beef, polish sausage, subs...they are all excellent. I always get the food to go, especially during lunch time, it's packed and they don't mess around...meaning they aren't big on customer service with a smile. LOL When I'm done with my meal I always wish there was more even though I'm full. You can get a hot dog with fries and a drink for about $5...great deal and great taste!

Lenny's Burger Shop has 3 locations in Phoenix. One is on Glendale west of I-17, 15th St. and Camelback and 19th Ave. and Greenway. We frequent the last one most because it's closest to us and it's on the way home from work. Lenny's specializes in burgers, of course, which are large and filling. They are great with everything on them including some jalepenos (my hubby's favorite). There are other sandwiches (chicken, sausage which are excellent) and hotdogs (not as great) there and the traditional side of fries which are a delicious crinkle cut with seasoning salt. The prices aren't too bad, you can get a burger and fries with a soda for around $5. They also specialize in shakes, they have at least a dozen different flavors. I love chocolate so that's the only one I've tried which is very yummy. Highly recommended!

I've lived in Phoenix on and off for 5 years and what first inspired me was the gorgeous weather in the winter time. (Ha! I was fooled! ;) ) Then it was the landscape and plant life here. This is the desert! It gets hot here...those from Phoenix know this. How can anything POSSIBLY live in this weather! It does and it's beautiful...a very different kind of beautiful.
I've visited the Desert Botanical Garden a few times since I've lived here and at first I was naive and thought "this is a botanical garden? what a joke!" The more time I spend in Phoenix and during my many travels around the state throughout the year I got a better understanding of how all the plant life survived. So when I visit the DBG I looked at everything a little closer and found a new appreciating for the desert and for all the animals that share the desert with the plants. There are many different trails you can follow and they have explanations in front of the different types of cacti and plant life. The last time I went there I made sure to take some pictures of everything I was interested in growing some day. I've learned that saguaro can take YEARS to grow so wish me luck on that.
The DBG is highly recommended if you are used to the typical floral gardens out east. Even if you've lived in Phoenix all your life it's a great place to go and learn something about the desert.

Our dog Sadie is an Australian Shepherd so she sheds quite a bit and gets it all over the couch and in every nook and cranny of the house. Also, we have a yard that has some dry grass because of our lack of rain in Phoenix and any of it will attach to Sadie's fur like a magnet and be dragged into the house and get everywhere.
We have a new baby in the house, he is 3 months old and we dread the idea of him picking up everything that is brought into the house by Sadie. On top of that, we just simply don't have the time or expertise to groom Sadie like we'd want. Sadie was the baby of the family but now the baby is the baby. :) So we just wanted to get her groomed so we don't have to worry about as much when summer time rolls around.
We found Galloping Groomer when we did a search on the Internet for mobile dog grooming. They were the closest to us so we got a quote from them for $50-55 based on Sadie's weight (25lbs) and length of fur. The next opening was a week so we scheduled an appointment for the afternoon. The day of the appointment about 5 minutes past after the time they were to come and the groomer called just then to say they were running a little late. They showed up 5 minutes after that which was a great thing to do now matter how late you are running.
The woman that did the groomer was Cindy and she had a van where she did all the groomer and bathing on the inside. It took around an hour and Cindy even cut our bill to $45 because she didn't do a final trim. She did such a good job it didn't even looked like it was needed. So we were very thankful for the discount. Cindy was very courteous and had 20 years experience of groomer under her belt. Sadie looks great...everyone jokes that she is a fat little dog but under all that fur she is very trim and she looks just like she did when she was a puppy. Galloping Groomer is highly recommended.

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and moved to Phoenix when I was 21. How little I knew what I'd be missing when I came here.
Now don't get me wrong, Phoenix has a vast choice of restaurants here. You have to really search for the best of rest here though. That's if you care about the quality of what you are eating. (Those that gravitate to McDonald's every day need not apply here.) What is great here is that you don't have to go very far to find fantastic Mexican food. But pizza...I mean...REAL pizza. The kind that makes your mouth water at the perfect thin crust and tons of melty cheese and the sausage that doesn't look like cat food and...well now I'm going to want this pizza for the rest of the week.
There plenty of pizza joints out here and some of them are SUPER cheap, but edible with the tokens thrown in (Peter Piper, Eatza Pizza). Then you go a very small step up and there's the plain cheap, edible but you feel they jipped you on the cheese or the sauce (Pizza Hut, Dominos). Ok, now the next step up is where we have some difference in quality. There are still some chains and some that are not chains out there but they are more than you want to spend unless it's a little treat to go out and get more...let's say...more something out of your pizza. I've had pizza at a few of these places and they are definitely better than the previous places I've mentioned, yet they are not that same Chicago Style pizza I so dearly crave. And I hate spending $15+ on pizza that is not exactly the kind I crave.
And so I lead all of you poor, lost Chicagoans to Johnnie's-Dee's Chicago Style Pizza. Trust me, you'll be cheering more when you try this place out.
I hate to say this but if it weren't for those silly Entertainment books you buy from .... wherever you get them from (sometimes they show up at your doorstep and cling to you until you buy them) we would have never found this place. Johnnie's had a coupon in one of those books you rarely use all the coupons for and we thought we'd try it, probably because it said "Chicago Style" on it. Well, we did go to Johnnie's and Johnnie himself was there manning the little business! I love a place like that. You have a better feeling the food is going to be good. Johnnie told us the coupon was a mistake to put in there for some reason but still honored it. It takes about 10 minutes to drive home from Johnnie's and if anyone knows me they know I can't wait more than 5 seconds to dig a little piece of food out to taste it. I felt like I was at heaven's gates and God just gave me the pizza he knew I would find glorious. I had found the place I yearned for that was 2,000 miles away! Yippy!!! The sauce was sweet the cheese was just piled on and it had plenty of sausage and ... I can't think of the other ingredients because I can't get the sausage part out of my mind. Another excellent thing Johnnie did for us was put some giardiniera on it that we purchased at one of the Italian delis around here. He was familiar with giardiniera but it just wasn't popular around here but he was happy to oblige and put it on the pizza.
Johnnie's does have seating in their restaurant and, of course, has carryout. I don't believe they have delivery.
The pizza runs about $20 for an 18" with around 3 toppings (just estimating) but considering I can't find this pizza anywhere else makes it all worthwhile.
The only real bummer about this place is that they are only open on Thursdays thru Sunday from 3:30 till 8:30 or 9.
On a menu you got from them it says "Lose a lot of wait, phone ahead and your order will be ready for pickup." They are happy to not make you wait for a piping hot pizza.
Another thing Johnnie's puts on their menu is "You've tried the rest. Now enjoy the BEST!" I couldn't agree with them more.
These guys get 5 stars despite the times they are open and the price because they are really worth visiting.
