My wife and I were extremely disappointed with the Skidway Lake Motel.
Due to a death in her family, we were in the area for several days during the week after Labor Day. Our first impression of the motel was very positive. It seemed like a cute place. Because of the time we arrived, the couple who own it just left a key on the door, with a note to stop by later to check in.
That was the good part. Once we were in the room (which was really a small cabin) it was one disappointment after another. A light outside our window was on all night for no apparent reason (remember, we were in a cabin, so there were no other rooms around and the light was not adjacent to any parking lot). The owners had clearly only given the room a quick look after the last guests left, because although there were a coffee maker, sweeteners, and creamer, there was no coffee. Also, one of the two mugs had not been cleaned after a previous use (yuck!). Despite our being the only guests there, the hot water tank only supplied enough for one very brief shower.
The final straw was when we came back after a day out and found that nothing had been done to make up the room for our second night. Keep in mind that we were the only guests they had.
There aren't many hotels or motels in the area -- the closest are about 10 miles away -- but please, stay somewhere else.

The food quality is unpredicatable, but you can't go wrong with the count twist sticks, cheese fries, and drinks.

Washtenaw Dairy is one of those gems that you find in almost every town -- if you look hard enough. Somewhat hidden in the middle of a large residential neighborhood, it is not uncommon on a summer afternoon or evening to find the line stretching well around the corner.
Washtenaw Dairy is as much a community gathering place as an ice cream shop; they offer a good variety of flavors at fair prices, but unfortunately the ice cream is no longer as good as it once was. There was a time when Washtenaw Dairy actually made their own ice cream, but today it is Stroh's (made in Detroit by the same company which makes Stroh's beer!), which can be bought in many area grocery stores.

I have been a satisfied member of UKFCU for more than 20 years.
I opened my account as a child, when my parents were employed at the University of Kentucky. When I turned 18, I began using UKFCU for checking, and direct deposited my paychecks. I now live six hours away, but I continue to use UKFCU for my primary checking account, as well as savings and my car loan. With online access, and ATMs through the Co-op Network, this has never been a problem.

I firmly believe Spalding Bakery makes the best donuts in the world.
I have sampled wares from most of the big chains (Dunkin Donuts, Tim Horton's, and yes, Krispy Kreme), and compared to what you get from Spalding, the "competition" is serving cardboard.
Spalding Bakery has been a Lexington landmark since 1929, and is a family business spanning four generations. They have relocated from the long-time location at the corner of N Lime and Sixth to Winchester Road, but from what I hear they aren't cooking any more, so you'll still need to get there early if you want any!
The family consistently turns down interview requests, saying that they are happy with the amount of business they currently get. They make a bunch of donuts in just four varieties early in the morning, and once they sell out (usually by 8 or 9 am) they close for the day.
mmmm....Spalding donuts....

This is our favorite Ann Arbor restaurant. We can always find something great for everyone here. Particular favorites are the cheddar ale soup and -of course - the beer! Like most Ann Arbor restaurants, the service is mixed, and that is the only knock against Grizzly Peak; we have had excellent service but also terrible service here. If the service was more consistently good, this would be five stars, however the food and the beer makes it worthwhile even if you happen to get a bad server.

Frankly, I think the Ann Arbor News is a miserable excuse for a newspaper. What little locally written material they carry tends to be replete with typos as well as grammatical and factual errors. This "morning paper" is commonly not delivered until after many people have left home for work. A co-worker of mine recently called them to complain about the late delivery and was told that the targetted delivery time was between 10 AM and noon! For good local coverage, use the Ann Arbor Observer (or even the free Michigan Daily), and then go online or subscribe to a national paper.

I do a lot of business lunches, often with as many as a dozen people. I have found Ruby Tuesday in general, and the restaurants in Allen Park and Canton in particular to be excellent locations to host such a lunch. The staffs are terrific and eager to accomodate the needs of a large business group, the food is good, and the price is actually a bit less than most other 'casual dining' chains.
