The Long Island Childrens Museum seems to be most famous for it's giant bubble making capabilities but they have many changing exhibits that will teach you and your kids a lot. Virtually everything is interactive- their is a "tv studio' where your kids can film or be the star.
My favorite part is the large room where your kids can design patterns, assemble sculpture pieces and just generally express creativity. You will also enjoy playing with the materials here.
