Located on Valencia next to the pirate store, Paxton Gate has the strangest, most interesting, amazing things gathered in one place. Need a platinum necklace shaped like bones? How about some candy made from bugs? This spacious store is like a gallery because there is so much to look for. Many years ago, my mother had a planter made from an ostrich egg. I broke it. Almost 25 years later I replaced it with an egg from Paxton Gate.

I love 826 Valencia. The pet project of writer Dave Eggers, it is a pirate store, reading work-shop place rolled into one. You can pick up the latest from McSweeney's Press and an eye patch or peg leg all at the same time. If you have kids, they offer work-shops for lots of different things with an emphasis on writing. My son has taken three different sessions where they wrote a play and then performed. Take the kids, there are tons of gimmicky pirate gear.

While this is not my super favorite hair place in the city, it is one of the few places on Haight Street where you can get a good cut. I have not been as impressed with the color, however. Stylists and receptionists are up to date on current styles and obviously know there stuff. The best haircut I got was done by a gal with a tattoo of a dead pin-up girl on her arm. I was a walk-in, and she gave me the shortest cute pixie cut. Intimidation factor can be high, as are the prices. However, if you need a cut now and happen to be on Haight Street, this place will work.

I never used to shop here because the window is filled with flowey flower print dresses. I had a friend who always raved about this place, however, I hated her clothes, way to Stevie Nicks. Recently, I checked this place out again and was thrilled. Prices can be a bit high, however, I was seeking that perfect, elusive black dress and I found it. Ambiance offers you the whole look from clothes, to jewelery, to hats and stockings. I don't reccommend you go with "the whole look", however, if you need something a really girly piece, this place is for you. Staff is unremarkable, atmosphere is crowded but cozy

I have this chair in my house that I am compelled to constantly re-cover. Discount Fabrics on Haight has been my number one craft stop for years. Need a piece of pink fur for a Halloween costume? They have it and you probably will pay pennies for it. Need ribbon or trim? How about updating an old shirt with new buttons? You may have to dig a bit, but it is usually worth it. Staff is helpful, make sure and check out the remnants. Currently my chair is covered with a mustard and red fabric. If you look closely, you will see that the red print is actually monkeys with their tails hooked together. Thanks Discount Fabrics.

This is a drag queen store. The first indication that you are in for a unique shopping experience is the giant set of blow-up legs wearing fishnets over the entrance. Inside you will find more feathers, spandex, and sequins in large sizes than anywhere else in town. If you are looking for something extra fun to wear I reccommend you check it out. Extensive collection of costume jewelery and a really fun staff make this a must when you are shopping Haight Street.

Located on Haight Street, this store is filled with lots of out-of-towners, however, the busy retail atmosphere is only front of house. As you are led to the rooms in the back it becomes apparent that these folks mean business. I have never seen a cleaner shop. Have been both pierced and tattooed here and being a bit of a germaphobe, I loved this place. I have gotten four large pieces done here by Brian and I love them. People have stopped me on the street to comment on the work that he did on my arms. Staff behind the counter can be a bit annoying with the "too cool for school" attitude, but hey, I cut them a break because they are young and they do have to deal with Haight Street foot traffic all day. Also, there is a gal that tattoos at the shop who did a tattoo on a friend of mine that was a pin-up girl based on my likeness. It really looks like me. Can't remember her name, but I think she is the only gal at this shop.

Jerry's Tattoos is currently my favorite tattoo parlor. Since I have many tattoos, I have checked out several shops in the city and this is one of my favorites. Connected to it's own coffee place, you can get a cup of joe and a tattoo in one stop. The intimidation factor is extremely low. The studio is a big open room, so as you're getting tattooed, it's fun. The atmosphere is casual with the kids of one of the artists around occasionally. So far I have had three pieces done here and have been very happy with the results. Talk to Van or Anthony.

Located in the Ferry building, we are blessed to have one of the WORLDS BEST chocolatiers. Michael Recchiuti has an uncanny ability to pair the most amazing flavors coating them in high-quality chocolate. I am a connoisseur of great chocolate. Previous to Recchiuti, the best chocolate I had came from La Maison du Paris. This is better. Yes, it is pricey, however, where else can you pay two dollars for a life altering experience. Try the sesame and the signature burnt caramel. You will not be disappointed.

Do you have unpleasant errands to run in the Richmond district? Bribe your kid to stay well-behaved with a promise to go to this excellent comic
store. They have tons of stuff. Anime, grown-up comics, stuffed animals, key chains, any kind of cards(pokemon, etc.), a comprehensive collection of comics, and a place for the kids to hang out. In the back they have tables set-up so the kids can trade cards if they like. The place is spacious, and the folks behind the glass counter are an example of stellar customer service with a HUGE dose of patience thrown in. Right next door to Gordo's burritos and Tart to Tart so get yourself a treat.
