Been to the Fillmore Theatre in San Francisco, or as I should politically correctly call it the "SFWeekly Fillmore"? You should go. First, it is totally old school, every time I have gone security has been a cinch and at the top of the stairs you are greeted by a guy who offers you an apple. Apparently, this was for those folks back in the 60's tripping on acid. I guess apples are comforting. The band selection is rich. Wait around long enough and chances are your favorite band will play. Bar is good, standing room only on the bottom level, but don't miss the balcony. You will be able to watch your favorite musicians up close and personal create magic. GO!

Imagine if you will a movie house where you can see a double feature for the price of just one movie and the popcorn is real. This is the Balboa. Not always playing first run movies, they tend to have a lot of indie films as well as movies playing that have been out a while. There are a couple of good chinese restaurants out here, however, bring a jacket because it is always foggy.

This is the surf store closest to my house at Ocean Beach. It is a small store front packed full of boards and wet suits. These folks don't really bother with clothes, they have a couple of surf related items, however, the emphasis is on the boards. There is a wide selection on site, however, for a real treat go custom. It may be crowded and bare bones but if you want a board in San Francisco, go here.

Dianda's is a surreal experience the first time you go. Tucked into a block in deep Mission, this Italian bakery(yes, you read that right- Italian) is an unexpected find. You would expect Italian pastry this good and authentic in North Beach, how lucky to have it in a more accessible location. The morning pastries are good, as are all the cookies. Sometimes I go and pick out a bunch of different cookies, prices are reasonable so you can really sample. The cakes are where it's at though. If you really love someone get them the strawberry cake for their birthday. One thing though, there is no seating and the coffee is not great.

I am not very good on a skateboard anymore. Fortunately, I have a nine year old son so I still have a reason to visit this store regularly. I will be forever in debt to the folks that own this place for actually carrying a pair of jeans I could fit into post-baby. Boards, wheels, trucks, clothing, accessories, stickers, etc. All the stuff you need to be a skater - or just look the part. This place has been around for ten years now, they used to be on Shrader. I have been consistently shopping here and service/product is always solid.

La Rosa on Haight Street caters to the serious collector of vintage items. Jewelery, womens clothes, mens clothes and accessories are always in great shape. It is a bit expensive and as usual with vintage, sizing runs small. However, when you walk in, you know that you will not ever bring anything home that is seriously flawed. These folks pay attention to the merchandise and it shows. In addition to that, the staff is hands-down the best dressed in the city. Interior of store is a bit crowded - all of it is good stuff though, so you won't mind.

Do you need to send flowers to someone you really want to impress? This is the florist. A San Francisco tradition, I discovered these folks on accident. My old boss had flowers delivered for him to take to his wife. They were beautiful. I have only been on the receiving end a couple of times, however, I was thrilled. The arrangements are generous and they last forever. Feeling really extravagant? Have them do your wedding or a party. They have the reputation and the history, you won't be disappointed. If you want flowers like you see in the fancy restaurants, this is the place for you.

This store on Fillmore Street has a little bit of everything. Your first clue that you are in for a treat is when you see the window. Specializing in home stuff, it is so much more than housewares. They have some clothes, books, and my favorite thing - the linens. They have on display linens that I dream of having in my room. Imported from all over the world, the quilts are stunning. Selection is huge and expect to find a ton of things you never even knew existed, that you now have to have. Inside of store is a bit crowded but who cares? Have a friend you really like? This is the place to find that one of a kind gift.

Bernal Beast is great because they have a section where you can put together a bag of different treats for your dog. I have a 3lb chihuahua and he likes to go here. I checked it out originally looking for clothes and found them to be a little pricey. The people who work here are really nice though, and they do have quite a collection of toys. Also, parking on Cortland can be difficult, however, if you live in the neighborhood, I imagine it would be your first stop for doggy stuff.
