I went to Pitcock's to have some work done on my vehicle after having several of my friends recommend their place to me. The second or third time I brought my vehicle there, I was having them troubleshoot an electrical problem that we were having. After a few hours in the shop and no progress, I was out a hundred bucks or so and still had this sporadic electrical problem that would stop me from being able to start my vehicle. The next time the problem showed itself, the tow truck driver that I called figured out the problem in about 5 minutes. I don't know whether to sing the praises of the tow truck driver for his impressive (lucky?) troubleshooting or question the capability of the mechanics at Pitcock's. Since then I've been a little hesitant to take my vehicle back, but they did come highly recommended so perhaps I should give them the benefit of the doubt.

If you are into chicken wings and want to try someplace that is a notch above the rest of these types of restaurants, then try Pluckers. They don't just have your usual 3 types of wing sauce (mild, medium, hot) but rather 15 or so different sauces to pick from! One of the most unique options on the menu are the Dr. Pepper flavored wings. The sauce (as you would expect) is a bit sweet due to its unique ingredient, but it's quite good. I believe they have a lunch special where you can get 10 wings and a basket of fries for $7.99. The atmosphere is great in this place too, which includes several large screen televisions on which to watch ESPN or whatever they happen to have on at the time.

Paula Huemmer has been managing our homeowner's and auto insurance for 4+ years now and she is great! Very nice and always does great work. Paula has always impressed us by the way she remembers who we are, even if we have not spoken with her for a number of months. She is always prompt in responding to phone calls and makes sure we're taken care of.

I took my car to this Kwik Kar location to diagnose a Check Engine light and ended up investing about $700 without ever having the problem solved. I was desparate to get the problem solved because I needed my vehicle inspection renewed. They would do a little work and recommend that I drive it and see if the light came back on -- which it always did. They claimed to have fixed the problem and gave me my inspection sticker, but 2 days later that light was back on, so I'm not sure they ever did anything to help the situation. They did give me that sticker which allowed me to drive the car for another year, but I question whether or not they should have even done that (though I'm glad they did). Seems to me they just did what they could to get as much money out of me as possible. Perhaps they were honestly stumped by the problem, but I'm not going back if I can help it.

I realize there are a lot of burger joints in the world today and it may be a bold statement to claim "best" anything, but The Angry Dog in Deep Ellum (east of downtown Dallas) is seriously the best burger I've tasted in Dallas. Perhaps even the best burger I've had anywhere. From what I hear their hot dog is pretty decent as well, but I've never strayed from the burger after having it my very first time. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it!) If you go for lunch during the week, you'd be wise to go a bit early if you don't want to wait awhile because. lots of business people from downtown like to head over there for lunch.

Java & Cha is a great little coffee shop on Coit road next to the Cinemark discount theater. The location is nice if you want to be able to go to a movie and grab a cup of coffee afterwards, but regardless its a fun and unique place to stop by. They have a few board games available for their patrons (checkers, chess, etc.) and... drumroll please... free wireless internet! Yes, I know Starbucks has started offering this at a number of their locations, but even so it is a nice feature for those of us who would like to be able to sit and drink a nice hot (or cold) beverage while checking our email and whatnot, rather than sitting at home or in the office. Give it a shot! If I remember correctly, their frozen-cappucino drink is pretty decent.

It has a nice atmosphere with TVs for the ballgame and video games for older kids. I started eating there while I was in college and it's a great value for a struggling college student!

For those who haven't seen Fry's Electronics, it is roughly 2-3 times the size of Best Buy. If you want to really hang out and shop for awhile, you can even grab a cup of coffee in their cafe in the middle of the store! Very impressive just based upon the size of their storefront. The prices at Fry's are somewhat hit and miss. Most things are average-priced, but they have weekly sale items that can be really great deals. One of my favorite things to look for are their DVD specials -- great movies often priced around $6-$8. Check the Dallas Morning News on Fridays for their weekly advertisements.

The small Texas chain got started in College Station years ago and has spread to Dallas, Austin, and Houston. They serve up perhaps the best burritos I've ever had. These guys were around long before Chipotle and they are much better. They have lots of choices (4 different kinds of tortillas, 3 kinds of beans, etc) and better tasting ingredients. I've been a loyal customer since attending school at Texas A&M in College Station several years back and am thrilled that they now have a location here in Dallas right off Greenville (there's also one in Addison if that's more convenient). If it's your first time, get a "regular" and just go through the line (like you would at Subway) and choose your ingredients. I highly recommend the BBQ sauce! It's hard to say whether this really qualifies as Mexican food, as the Freebirds burrito really doesn't compare to anything you'd ever order at the standard Mexican restaurant. Even if you're not a big fan of Mexican food, you might want to give Freebirds a shot (yes, it's that good).

The first time I went to Blue Mesa, I was expecting the traditional Mexican restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised. The menu has many unique entrees that can only be described as "Southwestern". If you want a good opportunity to taste a variety of what Blue Mesa has to offer, go on Wednesday for lunch. For $10 you can have the buffet (which is a great deal, relatively speaking!). They also have a Sunday brunch buffet, which from what I hear is great! (Though I've never had it myself). Be sure to try some of the sweet potato chips while waiting on your order (they come along with the standard tortilla chips) -- very good. If you like Mexican food and want to try something different, check out Blue Mesa!
