This is the strangest consignment shop I have ever been to. There's not one thing in the entire store that I'd consider buying. I mean, if you're looking for a twenty year old television or a half used can of hairspray (seriously!), this might be a good place to go. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and steer clear. The clothes section is for the most part a bunch of worn out Kmart clothing, and the furniture is way too overpriced for its condition to be anything but a joke. I used to go into this store every once in awhile just to see if they finally had something worthwhile, but lately I've given up. Avoid at all costs!

Other than the CHKD stores, I've yet to find a thrift store in Norfolk that's worth shopping at, and this one is no exception. The store isn't all that clean and the merchandise is sub-par ... mostly non-name brands with major wear. The prices are extremely cheap, but there's nothing there worth buying, really. For a better thrifting experience, head on down Little Creek Rd. and go to the CHKD store instead - you'll get much better merchandise for your money.

I love this store, and I'm not even a real fan of antiques. There are cases and cases of items in this store - it would take hours to look at them all. My favorite part of the store are the display cases that hold the smaller items, everything from rare toys to antique jewelry. As far as I can tell everything is there on consignment from area dealers, and each dealer has their own case. I can't even begin to stress enough how much fun this place is! For the most part, the prices are reasonable, and I've often considered buying things I don't even have a use for just because they're unusual and cheaply priced. If you're in the Lynnhaven area, I'd highly recomment checking out Barrett's ... you'll be pleasantly surprised.

From the outside, this store looks great - it's huge and jam-packed with merchandise. However, once you get inside it's actually rather disappointing. They have obviously well worn clothing on the racks for more than you would pay for the item new from a department store - I saw several pairs of old Kmart jeans marked at $14.99, which is just silly. Maybe if you looked around enough you could find a few hidden bargains, but I was discouraged within the first five minutes. The one thing I did like is that they had a ton of new pairs of Adidas shoes (with Kohl's tags still on them) for $24.99 a pair ... not really a thrift store price, but not horrible, either. All in all, though, I'd recommend that you head to one of the CHKD or Goodwill stores instead ... they have much better merchandise at much cheaper prices.

I sell on eBay a lot, so I spend a lot of time in thrift stores. The CHKD stores are really some of the nicest that I've come across. They don't have nearly as much junk on the racks as at the chain thrift stores, and the prices are much more reasonable. The store on First Colonial is the closest one to my house, so I go there quite often. This store is the best of the best ... it's always clean and well-lit, the staff is friendly and helpful, and there's great merchandise at unbeatable prices. If you're looking for a fantastic thrift store without the Salvation Army clutter and high prices, I'd highly recommend any of the CHKD stores, especially the one on First Colonial Road.

I'm not a huge pawn shop fan, but my husband is an electronics nut and loves them. Birdneck Pawn is near our house, so we often end up there. I must say, as far as pawn shops go this one isn't too bad. It's clean and well-lit, and the merchandise seems to be mostly of high quality. The prices are reasonable (or at least no more expensive than most of the other pawns in town) and the staff is pretty much always pleasant. Although I'm not thrilled about being dragged into a pawn shop on a regular basis, there could be much worse ones to browse around in while the significant other drools over car speakers. Recommended!

Empire State College is a decent school with flexible class scheduling for working adults. I attended for a couple of semesters during my college career, and all my professors seemed to be top notch. There are branch campuses all over the state of New York, as well, so just about anyone in NY state is within driving distance of one of the campuses ... if not, they have a distance learning program. The one main complaint that I have about Empire State is that administration is almost impossible to get in touch with. When I was trying to get a simple mistake in my file rectified, I was referred to approximately five different people, wrote about fifteen emails and made more than a few phone calls (and got voice mail every time) ... to this day, I still haven't received a response from anyone, other than to tell me that I needed to speak to "such and such a person" instead. However, the academics and scheduling makes up for a lot of the problems with the administrative staff, so I'd recommend.

We were lucky enough to be able to attend one of the games during the Nationals inaugural season at RFK Stadium. The stadium is fairly large, and I believe it seats around 56,000 people ... not nearly as big as FedEx Field, but still a decent size. Parking and traffic around the stadium is horrible, of course, so if you live in the area try to take the metro instead. The game itself was a lot of fun ... the Nationals played the Braves and won. Food and drinks are a bit expensive, but that's pretty much to be expected at any sports venue. I'd highly recommend stopping in to see a game if you're in the D.C. area!

Redskins games are a lot of fun! FedEx Field is HUGE. Of course, parking is a pain (and expensive!), so if you live in the Washington D.C. metro area it's probably easier just to take public transportation. We attended one of their official pre-game tailgate parties, which was fun – they had free barbeque to eat and several former players and cheerleaders were there signing autographs. The game itself was great – a bit cold since it was in early January (too bad they don’t have an enclosed stadium!), but I enjoyed every bit of it. Food is expensive, but no more so than at most sports stadiums. I’d highly recommend a trip to FedEx Field if you’re in the area!

Motor World is a lot of fun and conveniently located near the Virginia Beach oceanfront. This is pretty much the only place in the city that has race cars, and they even have miniature cars for young children. The staff was extremely friendly when we were there, and admission to the park is reasonable. This would be a great place to take your family for a fun outing ...
