This is truly one of the best cupcakes I have ever tasted. A wide variety of flavors, they are almost better than homemade when I can be bothered. When I lived on the UES, I would treat my Brooklyn co-workers to a Crumbs cupcake on their birthdays, (the ones I liked anyway) and they would always rave and not share. When I moved to Brooklyn, many of them were very upset. Now when I visit, I visit Crumbs but I don't share.

An okay theater, like Geraldine O. the layout is not customer friendly. Restrooms are not that close to the theaters and can be as many as 3 floors up. Security is iffy and the clientèle can be a little rough especially on the weekend. Ticket prices are better than other locations and employees are sloooooow.

All the folks who rave about Junior's cheesecake have lost their taste buds or have never had truly good cheesecake. Overrated and overpriced is my long held opinion. A Brooklyn landmark, the food and service have not stood the test of time. For those who don't want to make the trek to B'klyn, there will soon be an outpost in that tourist mecca Times Square. Don't think I will visit.

This is the absolutely best steak I have ever eaten. They only serve a porterhouse and with a side of onions and the dipping sauce, to die for. If you want fish or chicken this is not the place to go, it's not happening. Don't want steak, the only option are lamb chops. Expensive and you must have a reservation, try early evening during the week. No plastic, just green. On street parking used to be easier but now that Williamsburg is chic, go for valet.

When my daughter went away to school and she wanted treats, specifically gummy worms and such. I went to Dylan's and stocked up. I had planned to have them ship it but it was only to Philly and to my surprise, the sales person recommended that I go to the post office instead of paying their rates, starting at $18. Slightly overpriced, this is the UES, their selection of loose candy is exceptional and she loves getting her treats from Dylan's. Their signature chocolate bars are fabulous and at 5/$10 not bad for premium candy bars. Service is always exceptional. (PS, I FedEx them for $8)

I remember when there was only one Loehmann's on West Fordham Road in the Bronx. As a student, if I needed a special gift for someone or a special outfit, Loehmann's was the choice (before Century 21 became chic). Then they moved and expanded. To me this was the beginning of the end. While you still find designer clothing, neither the prices or selections are worth the time and effort. Loehmann's is no longer New York's best kept secret, when tourists arrive in tour buses, I know I'm outta here. My last visit yielded nothing but crummy service and a crowd of Japanese tourists. Another New York institution has sold out to the masses. (Their ill thought out expansion to the burbs led to them declaring bankruptcy about 10 years ago and the closing of many locations including the new "flagship" in Manhattan).

Let me date myself and say that when first discovered Canal Jean Co, Soho was still cheap and they still had a store on Canal Street. While never the place to go the trendiest jeans, not what I wanted anyway, I could always find a pair of inexpensive jeans and somewhat bohemian styles. When I took my 18 year old there recently, the place was cramped crowded and customer service was non existent. She eventually gave up. She later returned on her own and said that even during the week, mid afternoon, the place was crowded.

The second of 3 stores in the NY metro area, CT and Long Island are home to the others. A supermarket with a limited selection, you save money the more you buy.
Kind of along the lines of a high end country store, they have everything. A bakery, fresh bread daily, a pastry shop (Arthur Ave Baking company) a butcher, a fish market, salad/hot food bar, deli. Meat and fish prices tend to be higher but quality and selection is excellent. Precooked meats include honey barbecued chicken wings that are to die for and at 5.99/lb an excellent bargain. Catering is also available.
Seasonal treats include a petting zoo for the kids in the summer, a cow, sheep, goats. Reindeer at Christmas, Christmas trees. A separate liquor store, an extensive selection of plants in the summer and my favorite a lobster dinner $10.99 last year with a whole lobster, corn on the cob, fries. Burgers and hot dogs are also available for those who want it.
A popular destination for Westchesterites who are closer to this location than going to CT, Bronxites and Manhattanites (you can tell who they are, they ooh and ah).

Just up the road on E 187 St in the Bronx' Little Italy from Egidio's this is an also ran. Pretty good but not Egidio's. With later hours than many of the pastry shops on 187 St they often end up being the second choice for last minute stops when I did not make Egidio's 7 pm closing. Very good birthday cakes, but their pastries are more Americanized than many of the bakeries on this strip and also slightly less expensive. Cookies by the pound run about $1 less than most of the others. Located closer to the Bronx Zoo, the less Italian sector of the neighborhood, you'll find more local customers. No gelato and no Italian ices.

Many years ago when I worked nearby, I was introduced to Italian pastries and this wonderful little pastry shop in the Bronx' Little Italy by my 2 cooks, who both happened to be Italian. Both swore Egidio's had the best pastries. Back then I didn't know Italian pastries from Adam. Their pastries were good.
As the years went by and I ventured out into the city and to other Italian strongholds I kept returning to Egidio's at the corner of E 187 St and Hughes Ave in the Bronx. They have added an espresso bar next door and they can get pretty crowded, especially in the summer time with tourists and visitors from outside the Bronx.
What to recommend? Anything, everything is good. They also have an extensive line of sugar free cookies and some pastries. Their gelato and Italian ices, available only in the summer are also fantastic.
Voted amongst the best in both New York Magazine and Time Out NY on multiple occasions.
