The Hope Ranch Inn is one of the older motels in Santa Barbara, and the rooms are a bit run down and in need of mantenance. They are still comfortable, however, and the hotel owners are friendly and accomodating enough to make up for the lack of amenities. There is an adjoining restaurant for breakfast, and it is just down the street from shopping at La Cumbre Plaza. I have often called the hotel and told them I always stay there while in town, and they give me a great price for my continued patronage.

The Isla vista Bookstore carries books for both UCSB and Santa Barbara City College. It is a really convenient way to purchase your books without having to deal with the crowds on the campuses. The selection is fair enough that you are usually able to find most of your books there, and they offer nostalgia gift items such as collegiate gear for both schools as well as local Santa Barbara merchandise. The store can get crowded, but there is usally ample staffing to help you find anything you might need.

Cowboys & Angels has a very nice facility that makes you feel at home instantly. The girls that work there aren't quite as hospitable, however, and they could have much better customer service skills. They charged me quite a bit extra to trim my hair after a coloring, which can be gotten for free at several other local salons, and their services were not worth the overall price. Even though the salon itself was very nice, I wouldn't go back there in interest of money and the staff.

Montessori Center School offers the best in education for the age range of 18 months to 6th grade. The school is arranged into four agre groupings: pre-primary, primary, elementary and upper elementary classes. The students learn with other students that are on their same level, and teachers are able to break students up into groups for lessons. Each class has a head teacher and an assistant teacher. The staff is well trained and excellent at what they do. The school is quite pricey, however, and there is often a very long waiting list, especially for younger children. The school also offers before and after school care.

The Arlington is a great place to take in a concert or film, especially in the fall when it is one of the theatres that host the Santa Barbara Film Festival. The venue is large with plenty of seating, but the better seats are definitely near the front. The inside of the Arlington is more than you would expect from the outside. The walls and ceilings are painted as though you are sitting in under a night sky in a mission courtyard. It's really a unique experience that makes your event feel really special.

The Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens isn't as big as some zoos in other cities, but it certainly makes up for its size by being one of the most gorgeous zoos in the country. The site is located atop a hill on the mesa, lending itself to gorgeous ocean views from the uppermeadow area (which is the site of numerous weddings and special occasions). There is a train ride for the kids as well as exhibits featuring some common zoo animals. They have some really great special events. Parking is ample.

I recently booked a trip through Archer Travel because they were able to get me the best price on my vacation. I found that their customer service was quite lacking both when I made the initial phone call and when I came in to meet with them. If they hadn't been able to save me such a significant amount of money over the next place, I definitely wouldn't have used their services. All in all, it wasn't a horrible experience. I didn't have to deal with their condescention for too long, and the money saved was worth the grief.

Beadworks is one of the biggest beading stores in the Sacramento area. They have a large selection of traditional beads, but not as many of the more modern and larger beads. This is a great place to take your daughter for her birthday and let her create a unique and special piece of jewelry. The best part about Beadworks is that they will teach you right there how to make all kinds of jewelry, so even if you have no experience, you can come in and leave with a great new piece of jewelry. Most beads are priced per bead (except for the seed beads which are tubed), so they can add up quickly.

Denio's has become less of a farmer's market and auction over the years and more of a swap meet and garage sale. True, they still have fresh fruits and vegetables (which can be had at great prices), but the most abundant merchandise at Denio's is "stuff" and "things." Everything from shoes, clothing, rugs, paintings, furniture, household items, building materials, tools, jewelry, stickers, toys and more. The prices are very reasonable, and many of the vendors will haggle over prices with you. The entrance is free on Fridays, but there are also only about half as many vendors. The parking is ample and they are open rain or shine.
