The Fair Oaks Theatre Festival is an annual production which is located in the ampitheatre in Fair Oaks Park in the Fair Oaks Village. The productions are generally directed by and put on by American River College. The shows are probably the most extravagant productions that ARC puts on each year, and they always receive rave reviews. There is usually one or two adult shows that run in the evenings and a children's show that runs earlier in the day. The actors are superb, and the shows are very often nominated for Elly awards for the acting as well as costuming and production.

Crocker Art Museum is one of Sacramento's most well known art establishements. It is located at the old Crocker Mansion and adjacent to Crocker Park in downtown Sacramento. The exhibits change, but the main central art stays the same. The museum features more classical artwork than modern works. The mansion itself is really a piece of artwork. The museum can get really crowded on weekends, and parking can sometimes be an issue. There is metered parking on adjacent streets. I would not recommend the art museum for younger children because most younger children would be easily bored, and there are lots of stairways and railings that you have to watch out for.

The Crest Theatre is a wonderful example of renovated Sacramento architecture. It combines the richness of the old building with new state of the art technology able to direct large scale concerts and film festivals. The Crest Theatre is most known for showing art and independent films, and it is a great place to go to watch some amazing films that are not in the mainstream theatres. Every fall there is a film festival produced by local artists called "A Taste of Sacramento" which showcases all local talent in directing, acting and producing.

Every child that grew up in Sacramento has frequented the Railroad Museum on at least one school field trip. The museum is full of history, and children are always amazed and inspired by what they learn in their visits there. There are numerous trains that you can actually board and see how everything works. There are plenty of hands-on activities to keep the attention of younger children, and older children will be fascinated by the stories told in the tour. The price is reasonable, and once a year they even have free admission day (although be warned - it's VERY crowded on that day!)

University Art has two locations in town, and both locations have the same excellent prices and customer service. The selection of supplies is incredible, and I have rarely gone in there without finding everything I needed and more. The staff is eager to assist, and will even offer to help you cut down larger sheets of paper or foam core to the size you actually need - a huge time saver when doing projects for school. There is also a great variety of art books and unique gift items such as magnets, journals and beginning art kits. They take returns easily as long as the objects are unused. My only gripe is that I wish they were open later!

Art Ellis is a good place to go if you're looking for some really unique art supplies. They have a good selection of papers, and they are a good source for architectural model building supplies. They are a bit overpriced, and there is competition directly across the street. The staff is hit-or miss. Some days they are perky and helpful and other days they are just plain rude. I generally only frequent Art Ellis if there is something specific that I know they carry that the other art supply stores do not. I like to support local business over national chains, but the prices and customer service don't always support that decision at Art Ellis.

The Boardwalk is one of the best places in town to grab a drink or two and listen to some great local music. Occasionally they will also have larger name bands playing, but on those nights, they generally charge a larger cover charge. The atmosphere is really laid back and the crowd can really vary in age depending on the bands playing. The place is usually pretty crowded, so I'd suggest getting there early if you want to get a good spot. The drinks are fiarly priced and don't take too long to get.

Country Club Lanes is probably best known around Sacramento as THE place to go for Glow Bowling. Glow Bowling has been a huge craze around here lately, and the atmosphere is more club-like than old boring bowling alley. The effects are fun and the place is always packed. The prices are a bit steep compared to other bowling venues around, but the experience is definitely more unique and worth the extra few bucks. There is an adjoining lounge for drinks, and the kids can have fun in the large arcade area.

Drive-in theatres are few and far between, so it's nice that despite the annual rumors that the site will be torn down to see that the drive-ins are still running strong after all these years. The atmosphere is great, and there is nothing like watching a movie in the outdoors. The sound has been upgraded so that you can listen to the movie from your car radio instead of the big clunky boxes of yesteryear. The price is unbeatable for two films, however, sometimes the film parings seem to be a bit odd. The only cons that I can think of is that there is a lot of cigarette smoking, and sometimes it is hard to see a darker movie on the screen. A great treat for the family on hot summer nights.

Arco Arena is home to many special events throughout the year: concerts, ice skating, motorcross, graduations and children's shows, but the thing that Arco Arena is most known for is being home to our beloved basketball team, the Sacramento Kings. Kings games at Arco Arena have been sold out for the last several years, but tickets are easy to obtain from other venues. The arena is extremely comfortable and state of the art, and there honestly is not one single bad seat in the house. You can easily view the court from even the highest up most corner seats, and you are guaranteed to have a great time. The food is superb for an arena, and the offer gourmet fare from several vendors throughout. There is also a Sacramento Kings Team Store located in the arena.
