The minute you walk into the store it feels like December. Christmas music plays, ornaments and lights are everywhere, and it is easy to forget that you were just walking around in 90-degree heat in July. Paisley's offers various Christmas items some of which are available everywhere but others of which are handmade and/or tailored to the area. There are many ornaments with "Avalon" or "Stone Harbor" and the year written on them. They also have harder-to-find items as well. My girlfriend (a Girl Scout leader) found Girl Scout ornaments here that she never saw anywhere else. There are some hand-painted ornaments of local colleges and sports teams. They offer many of the popular Yankee Candles. There is even a small section devoted to Halloween. Lots of good items here for anyone who enjoys the holiday season.

I do not think highly of Shady Brook Farm in general as a business, but I think they do hold some nice events around the holidays especially Halloween and Christmas. In general, they offer a market that sells gardening supplies and food items. Around the holidays, however, Shady Brook has Halloween festivities that include cornfield mazes and hayrides. These are done pretty well and priced reasonably. The hayride takes full advantage of the farm's vast grounds and includes actors as well as special effects. At Christmastime the farm puts on a pretty impressive drive-through light show. They even let you tune your car's radio to a station that complements your light show experience with Christmas music. Unfortunately, the light show does not really change from year to year but it should be experienced at least once. Another nice thing is that the admission fee goes to charity. I would not recommend Shady Brook for most visits, but it is good around the holidays.

Dr. Filips shows that he cares about his patients. He never seems put off when they ask medical questions. His examinations are thorough and he ensures that he gets as much information about your symptoms as possible before diagnosis. His staff is also kind to the patients and take care of them well. He is not the kind of doctor that makes patients wait half an hour beyond their scheduled time. His office even had flu vaccine in the winter of 2005 when many others had run out because they placed their order early. He does keep some evening and weekend hours for those who cannot make weekday appointments. I have never felt uncomfortable walking in or out of his office, and I believe that's one of the most important things a doctor can do.

Kohler's opens early every day in the summer (except Thursday when they are closed) and people are eager to get their hands on their many different pastries. They have perhaps best known for their delicious cream donuts, but offer many other varieties like crullers and jelly donuts. The bakery itself is small, but coffee, cookies, and cakes are also offered. Most of what they sell is good, but their cakes actually leave some to be desired. Unfortunately they just taste too dry even though the icing is good. Just about everything else they sell is wonderful and sells out by early afternoon almost every day. Prices are very reasonable given the quality of the treats.

Duffer's has everything. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, homemade ice cream, plus an arcade and miniature golf course. The menu consists mostly of sandwiches and other diner-like fare. They do offer some dinners, however, that include salads and sides. They really fill you up as the portions on everything (especially the ice cream) are generous. The small sundaes contain about 3 scoops of ice cream and a heap of whipped cream. The larger ones are simply huge. The ice cream is simply delicious. It's home made and every ice cream dish comes with a homemade pizzelle cookie, which is a ncie touch. The mini golf course was redone just a couple of years ago and it is a lot of fun for the whole family. It's not overly challenging, but some holes are difficult. There is also an opportunity to win a free game. Duffer's is crowded every night and parking is sometimes difficult, but it's worth it. Every visitor to Wildwood or a nearby town with kids and/or a sweet tooth should stop here at least for dessert.

Avalon Freeze is a classic dairy stand. It has stood for decades and is open every day in the summer. They offer both soft ice cream and yogurt, but only in vanilla and chocolate flavors. All taste excellent (even the fat-free yogurt). Water ice is also available for those who want something lighter, and it is decent. They make sundaes, shakes, and banana splits as well as many other treats. Their best item, however, is the "Avalon Freezer." Similar (but better than) a Dairy Queen "Blizzard," the Freezer involves choosing ice cream or yogurt, adding a candy like crushed M&Ms, mixing them together in the same machine used to make milkshakes, and then adding more candy to the top. It is fairly big, and fairly expensive ($5), but absolutely delicious. There is no wonder why the Freeze is crowded from around 7-11 PM (when they close) just about every night.

Nemo's is a convenient Italian/pizza place in Avalon. For eating in or taking out, it probably offers the best "fast" Italian food on the island. Nemo's also offers delivery, and will even deliver food directly to the beach. The dining in area is small, but the wait staff is attentice to customers and the overall presentation is simple yet effective. Portions of food are generous on main courses, but a little less so on some sides. The house salads need more vegetables and/or better lettuce. The pizza is very good and not overly greasy. Sandwiches utilize fresh ingredients. Pasta is not overcooked and the sauce is plain but decent. The value is wonderful. It is very easy to get a complete Italian dinner for $10 or less per person here. Unfortunately, Nemo's does not accept credit cards (which is not too unusual for places here). That is inconvenient, and needs to be changed. Still, Nemo's offers great value.

Benny the Bum's offers a selection of seafood and meat dishes. The atmosphere is very casual with some televisions around the restaurant as well as signs of Americana. The place also has a bar with a selection of various drinks. The best deals can be had from 5-7 PM when Benny's serves early bird specials including soup and salad for under $10. The portions are generous and the food is well-prepared. Their homemade soups are delicious and the seafood is fresh. Some dishes, like the shrimp scampi are actually a little too generous on garlic but generally the flavors are balanced well. The servers are friendly and there is usually enough separation between the non-smokers and those who smoke that this is not an issue. Recommended especially for an early dinner on a weeknight because on weekends and later than 7 it can get crowded.

Piccolo is a nice, small Italian/Pizza restauarant located near the Acme in Newtown. They offer sit-down service for lunch and dinner as well as takeout. They also let you BYOB. The menu consists of various salads, pasta, pizza, seafood, and meat. There is some good attention to detail. Thier homemade balsamic vinegar dressing is delicious as are the warm and crusty rolls with dipping oil they provide before your meal. What stands out most in this place is its Brooklyn pizza. Available for taking out as well as for sitting in the restaurant, this pizza is made with a thin and crispy crust. It is square and cut into 8 fairly large, rectangular slices. There are fresh gobs of mozzarella, tomatoes, and grated cheese with basil and olive oil. It makes for one of the freshest-tasting and delicious pizzas you could try. It could use a little less oil, but otherwise its delightful. It's worth the premium over the price of a normal pizxza and is reason alone to try Piccolo.

It's hard to find any ice cream place to challenge local favorite Goodnoe's dominance. Zebra-Striped Whale (ZSW), owned by the author of a children's book with the same name, offers Thomas Sweet ice cream as well as coffee and some cookie and candy treats. Similar to Coldstone Creamery, the store offers to mix in various candies to the ice cream or yogurt of your choice although the employees sometimes have to work hard to manipulate the ice cream. Nevertheless, they do a good job at serving customers and handle crowds well despite the relatively small overall space available. The quality of all of their food is top notch and is priced fairly. There is some seating available inside for people who want to enjoy what they bought without leaving the store. Recently named as a Best of Philly shop, ZSW really is worth a try.
