Technically, Japonaise Bakery is located in Brookline, about a block from the Brookline/Boston border, but that doesn't affect its status as one of the best bakeries and hidden gems in the area. Goods are prepared fresh daily, with offerings that you will be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in town. The thick slices of their loaves of bread come out near-perfect every time, regardless if you choose wheat, light cream, or heavy cream. Their individual pastries please both the palette and the eyes. Onigiri, or rice balls in seaweed, are a delicious reminder of sushi but without the raw fish. Cakes are to die for; ranging from banana chocolate mousse to green tea. Prices are reasonable for the unique fare that this bakery brings to the table.
