Living just a few blocks away, I used to frequent this hair salon whenever I was in need of a cut. In retrospect, I think that my money could have been much more well spent elsewhere. There are two male stylists here, who seem more suited to styling women's hair than that of men's. Not knowing any better at my age, I continued to go there for most of my high school years, as did many of my peers in school, many of whom still go there. There are now a number of better options in the Allston area that run around the same price or less and will leave you much more satisfied.

I've come to this hair studio for the past 18 months, which makes me one of their many loyal customers. The first time I came here, the stylist completely changed my hairstyle when all I was expecting was a trim. It took a little bit of getting used to, but it was good enough that I came back. On my second trip, I found the stylist that I have used for more than a year now. The stylists here are personable, friendly, and talkative. The rest of the staff also make the experience a pleasant one. For men, haircuts are $30 with wash and dry not including tip. I'm not sure about prices for women. They also offer the standards such as hair dye, perms, and sell an array of salon products.

Sunshine Travel, located in the heart of Chinatown on Tyler St., across from the China Pearl Restaurant offers packages for many different destinations, either by bus or by plane. They also offer travel between Boston and Mohegan Sun/Foxwoods Resort and Casino regularly several times daily. You might be familiar with their fliers if you have ever parked in Chinatown, usually in bright colored ink. Trips revolving around Chinese pop star concerts are popular. As are tourist destinations such as Niagara Falls/Toronto or Washington D.C. Deals aren't bad for packages like these per person, but sometimes it gets annoying sitting on all those buses.

What comes to mind when you think of Coolidge Corner? Besides the theater there aren't really any landmarks or significant stores or shops, which makes Coolidge Corner Theater all the more important to the area. Don't be mistaken. The big blockbusters do not usually make it to the theater, given its limited seating and just two screens. No, Coolidge Corner Theater targets a different crowd. Often it is independent films gracing the screen at Coolidge. Other times it is Japanese animated films such as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. Finally, there are cult classics that find their way to the screen as midnight or weekend showings. Coolidge Corner Theater is definitely unique, but it doesn't excuse the crampedness.

Jasmine Sola has come a long way, having opened several new locations throughout Massachusetts and New England. One of their first stores, the Newbury St. location, has a great selection of name brand women's clothes, many of which are offered a few blocks away at the Neiman Marcus Department Store in Copley Place. The store is kept tidy and well organized. The biggest disappointment about this store is that it uses only about 1/20th of its space to offer men's clothing. The other stores don't even carry any men's apparel. Sola Men closed due to lagging sales, and the variety of brands that is offered to the men pales in comparison to that of the ladies. It's tough for a guy to be occupied for more than a few minutes while women peruse the racks for the latest fashion.

Taking advantage of the rising popularity of bubble tea drinks in Boston, Infusion Tea Spa opened about two years ago down the street from the 88 Supermarket Food Connection, where a Lollicup Tea Franchise has been open for some time. They tried to capitalize with grand opening promotions but I haven't noticed a popularity comparable to that of Lollicup. In fact, I'm surprised that this shop is still open. The cafe is quaint, with a dimmed light atmosphere, and serves a handful of snacks to go along with its selections of bubble tea drinks. As for the bubble tea itself, it wasn't what I expected, in a bad way.

Located on Hanover St in the heart of Boston's North End, Mike's Pastry has been a dessert haven for many years. Mike's sweets and treats will have you dangling by a string, at the edge of your seat, savoring every morsel. Varieties of desserts include cookies, brownies, cakes, lobster tails, and so many countless others. The lobster tail, a croissant-like pastry in the shape of- you guessed it- a lobster tail and filled with cream comes in a number of varieties as well. On weekends, this joint is open as late as 11pm, perfect for a trip after dinner at a North End restaurant.

Technically, Japonaise Bakery is located in Brookline, about a block from the Brookline/Boston border, but that doesn't affect its status as one of the best bakeries and hidden gems in the area. Goods are prepared fresh daily, with offerings that you will be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in town. The thick slices of their loaves of bread come out near-perfect every time, regardless if you choose wheat, light cream, or heavy cream. Their individual pastries please both the palette and the eyes. Onigiri, or rice balls in seaweed, are a delicious reminder of sushi but without the raw fish. Cakes are to die for; ranging from banana chocolate mousse to green tea. Prices are reasonable for the unique fare that this bakery brings to the table.

This small Chinese bakery on Brighton Ave. in Allston offers an assortment of baked goods that you wouldn't find in most other bakeries. Open until 11pm on most nights, you can pick up loaves of bread that are made with taro, pineapples, or raisins. The assorted buns that they have are similar to those that you would find in a Chinatown bakery but are very unique to this bakery. Unexpected twists are what makes their goods special, although prices are more expensive than their Chinatown counterparts. Yi Soon also serves cakes by the slice or whole for that special occasion.

If you're shopping for transportation to and from New York City, Fung Wah Bus Transportation is your most inexpensive option. Prices have risen, mind you, since officials forced the company from its Chinatown operations to South Station Bus Terminal, but it is still the cheapest ticket in town. $40 gets you a round ticket from Boston to New York Chinatown, but be ready to stand in line if you want to take any scheduled bus. You'll also want to stay away from the back of the bus where the bathroom quickly becomes repugnant.
