Hole in the wall lunch spot offering vegetarian and vegan hot dogs downtown (right near the convention center). The place also offers internet access for a reasonable rate or free if you eat there. It is cool that they only offer veggie hot dogs, though I will say I walked in originally hoping for some pork and/or beef-alicious dogs. I ordered a plain jane with cheese and it was quite tasty, not soggy or rubbery like other reviews. Prices are only ok (lunch for about $5-6). My experience with staff was good, though I see others had a bad time. Quirky atmostphere and good ambiance.

I'll admit it. I'm a karaoke junkie. My friends and I call it our ‘group hobby’. When we don’t feel like hitting the bars, we go to booth karaoke. Venus is one of the two options we have found in the city. The good part—all of their music selections are through some online server, so the music queues up fast. The bad side, there are no binders to flip through, so you have to navigate on a secondary, small tv with a remote controller to search for and program the song you want. It doesn’t disrupt the person who is singing, so that is good. The search feature is ok. Selection is decent, probably its biggest downside. Many of the English songs have alternative karaoke videos with japanese actors. The rooms are kind of fun and barrack like in a modern minimalist kind of way. They offer 8 different languages to choose from. I've only been once, but it was a fun evening with good friends.

I called Dot Painters for a quote this spring. I thought the guys were both very professional, easy going, and responsive. I ended up going with another company who could do the work for slightly less money and quicker, but that isn’t a knock on Dot Painters. They made arrangements to come out for a quote promptly. Their quote was reasonable compared to all of the quotes I got, and I only picked another company because they were willing to get started the next day after I got the quote and I was anxious to get started.

Lieu just painted the exterior of our house and I am quite happy with the service, responsiveness, and attention to detail. I called several people for quotes through Judy’s Book, and was actually referred to Lieu through a landscape architect I was separately getting quotes from. Lieu’s quote was the lowest I received. He was very efficient, professional, and easy to get a hold of. He and his crew did a thorough job. They did a thorough job with the prep work and the paint job was very tidy. I especially liked that he was willing to show up early in the morning (8 a.m.) to meet with me before I went into work. My only comment is that although he speaks English fluently, he does so with a bit of a Vietnamese accent. I never had any problems communicating with him, but I could see where it might be a problem for some folks.

BEST BRUNCH BUFFET EVER. Especially if you like fancypants brunch with carved prime rib, freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh shrimp cocktail, crab legs, lovely pastries, made to order omelets and waffles, etc. This was by far the most expensive brunch I have ever had, but fortunately I was able to expense it when I tried it. My husband took his mom there for brunch one year and she was definitely impressed :) It is an exquisite meal. Service is always 5 star-staff is attentive (some might say overly so). This is the kind of place where the wait staff refolds your napkin anytime you get up to try more food from the buffet. Luxurious, tasty, and oh so fancy.

Beba's Delicatessen is located in the Park Place Building at 6th/Seneca, right near freeway park. Since I work in the building, I tend to head down to Beba's at least once or twice a week for lunch. They make breakfast sandwiches such as bacon, egg and cheese croissants for under $3. They make 'made-to-order' sandwiches, baked potatoes, salads, and other hot foods for lunch. I highly recommend the place for a sandwich. It isn't as expensive as some of the other downtown sandwich shops, and they have great customer service. You can get a sandwich stacked with deli meat and fresh toppings for about $5. My favorite is the Beba's Supreme. The owners are friendly and always strike up a conversation. They always remember that I don't like tomatoes and that I love bacon on my sandwiches. That means a lot to me when people take the time to remember my name, take mental note of my food idiosyncrasies, and greet me with a smile. They do a great job for breakfast and lunch. Cheap grub and friendly service. Best thing--during the summer the City puts out tables and board games in Freeway Park so you can eat your sandwich in the sun and play Scrabble with a friend.

If you like gelato and find yourself downtown, try Gelatiamo. It is located at 3rd/Union. They have a lovely selection of tasty gelato and other pastries. The real winner in my book--the gelato ice cream cake--an extravagant treat for someone you love. I recently had the raspberry gelato ice cream cake and practically melted away in ecstasy. The gelato is authentic and superb! The place can get crowded and, as you might expect, it isn't cheap. That said, spoil yourself if you are having a bad day at work or find yourself attending a play or event downtown. You are worth it.

After hearing about Half Price Pots for a while, I finally decided to head down to Renton and check out the stock. Ooh! You know you are a gardening nerd when you ooh and ahh over various colored outdoor pots. I couldn't decide. Wandered the yard for almost an hour before selecting a few. I exclaimed numerous times: "Oh, look at that one!" or "Ooh, that one's cheap!" "Ooh, that one is shaped like a honeypot!" I went with some friends and both households walked away with 3 large, glazed garden pots for a decent price. I have even mentally bookmarked a few other styles and will likely go back to pick up a few more in the next couple of weeks. The have small ones, tall ones, big ones, square ones, etc. You get the point. Looking for some good pots and don't feel like paying outrageous prices? Go to Half Price Pots.

Looking for a good place to buy new and used hip hop on vinyl? Check out Respect Records. The selection runs deep and there are great finds (though maybe I shouldn't be sharing this because you will 'steal away' with the jams!). You won't find any bargain basement used records, but the used records they do carry are in excellent condition. Expect to pay CD prices for most full length albums. I always drop a load of cash when I shop there because I can't seem to put back the rarities I inevitably find while browsing. The owner is knowledgeable and helpful, and he will special order anything they don't have in stock. Great record shop.

Seattle Central Grind is a great local, independent coffee shop. It is the kind of place where the owner always remembers you and your favorite drink. Even if I don't stop by in the morning, I get a friendly wave from Samuel, the owner, when I walk by with my dog. Samuel is also an artist and has his paintings for sale on the wall. I will admit it is not the absolute best cuppa joe I've ever consumed, but there is something to be said about supporting one of the few remaining African American owned businesses in the CD. Give 'em a try.
