This is such a great place if you need to have your mower serviced or you're looking to buy a new/used one. The guys that work there are really knowledgable and they are real old-timers (they've seen a few models in their time)---very cool business and takes you back in time a bit. I bought a used mower from them and it works great, was a lot cheaper than a new one, and the service was very old school.

I've sold several dozen cds to sonic boom in ballard and they pay a lot more than other places. It depends upon what you have--they pay more for indie releases, but won't give you much for any BMG club discs or big mtv bands (probably not worth bringing those in). Jason and Dusty are the best guys to talk with. They can't keep their used inventory on the shelves for long (people buy it up) so they are usually in the market for good stuff.

Time for a renovation!!!!! Does anyone remember the Northgate theatre's final years? Oh,the fine scent of urine, spilled beer, clogged ventilation systems, and old shoes is the potpourri of the guild. Not to mention dimensions of the theater (can you say "tunnelvision".......however, the 2nd screen is great. They still bring in the great flicks and it's a perfect spot to get dinner or a drink beforehand, but like an old dog, it needs a bath.

The food is ok, the service ok, so why give this place two stars? Going the way of Fremont makes this once separate city a haven for the meatmarket crew. Hey, I'm all for change, as we all should be, but the rolex/hummer/steroids crowd should stay in belltown and hang out at axis. I'll give the place another chance because the cuisine is decent, but weekends are a "no go". There is a lot that goes into making a restaurant a great spot, and they have it 1/3 right.
Best of luck to the Matador--focus on the cuisine and atmosphere.
OK, so I went back again because we really needed outdoor seating and you know what....I've warmed up to the place. Still doesn't have the mix right, but the food and cocktails are really good and the service was much better. Upped to 3 stars.

Ballard has changed so much in the past decade that at some points, it is unrecognizable. The Matador is bringing in the bridge, tunnel and expressway, meatmarket striped shirt crowd, so if that's not your bag, steer clear. You pass the new boutiques, renovated shops, expensive decor, and then you get a whiff of smoke, bourbon and omelttes as you pass Hatties and you sense the true spirit of old ballard. Hatties is holding down the old school flag and minus the repainted sign and back of the building, it hasn't changed much--step back in time. There are very few places where people of all backgrounds can sit together and have a drink, talk about random topics and have a good laugh. The breakfasts are great, the bartenders are awesome and the drinks are consistently strong. I miss the old 45 jukebox which had a copy of the Replacements "I'm in Trouble" and various Cash singles, but they still play great tunes.

I'm doing my best to avoid home depot and support the local guys. Crown Hill Hardware gives me every reason to do just that. They are friendly, always greet you and ask you if you need help finding anything. Their selection is perfect and prices are competitive. Why scour the aisles of the mega stores, when you can walk right in, talk with someone knowledgeble and ready to help, find what you're looking for and avoid the crowds. Power tools, to nails, to gardening stuff...you name it.

For those looking off the beaten path, this has been a great place for years that still seems untouched--rare find. It seems like it's one of those places that only locals should know about (and for those ballardians that wish it was, apologies).. but what the heck...it reminds me of a lot of the small cafe/bars/bistros that you would see in europe without having to try to be such--JB readers should treat themselves. Next door to Le Gourmand. Great outdoor seating area, some of the most creative cocktails in town and a delicious, light menu. Warm staff, best atmosphere...and very romantic or perfect for a small gathering of good friends.

I've been going to Pesos for several years now, and the steak tacos are always good. The margaritas are better. The chicken, well, it's been raw twice in the past 4 visits and I got food poisoning from some bad prawns once. Stick to the liquor or drink enough so it kills the bad bacteria. For the single crowd this is a good spot, but I'd place my bet on the El Camino in Fremont for the rest fo us (who enjoy their food cooked and a more intersting atmopshere--and the outside deck...)

You can always put your kalim out on the deck in the summer, hose it down with cold water, use gentle soap and scrub it down (recommendation from friend in Yemen--and it works!), but why go through the hassle. Emmanuel's provides good service, quick turn-around and you know it's being done right. However, if you're in a pinch for time and short on cash, do it old-school style.
