I had matzoh brie and kasha varnishas - it was probably 2000 calories of carbo loaded happiness. If you are a pastrami or corned beef guy (or gal), your sandwich will be four inches tall. Awesome.

Amy and I went with our friends Dave and Maureen to the opera last night. Yes - the opera (the music thing, not the browser.) Now that I'm 40, I've decided it's time to make sure I do more "grown up things" and the opera seemed like it fit the bill.
Amy is a classical music fanatic and loves the ballet, so I've always spent plenty of time at the symphony and the ballet. I particularly like ballet as it's usually a little warm in the theater which generates a deep nap (one of those sloppy sweaty ones) if the ballet isn't captivating me (I love modern, I fall asleep during story ballet.)
So - I expected to enjoy the opera for a little while and then fall into a deep sleep. We saw The Abduction from the Seraglio and I was blown away. The Ellie Caulkins Opera House is phenomenal. The seats are comfortable (we had great ones), the acoustics were awesome, and the set was beautiful.
Abduction from the Seraglio is in German, which was a little weird since the "radio opera" I usually hear randomly is usually Italian. There were these cool little electronic translation screens on the seat backs ("The Figaro System") that translated the opera into English, which made it really accessible.
I loved it. Even though I was wiped out from my week, I stayed fully engaged. The music (Mozart) was engaging and the performers were stunningly good.
Of course, we started with dinner at Kevin Taylor's at the Opera House in the basement of the Opera House. The food was awesome and the decor / environment was really interesting.
It's always great when your "first time" of something goes well. Last night was really fun. Thanks to my friends Dave and Maureen for making this event happen.

I had a late dinner with my friend Greg. Sazerac is across the street from the W Hotel where I'm staying. We walked in, got a table (it was pretty empty for 8pm on a Thursday night.) The service was prompt and good. I started out with hushpuppies and molasses - classic comfort food - which was yummy. My main course was a super creamy ravioli dish of some sort with backed bread crumbs on top. I was worn out after about three bits - it was just way too cheesy / creamy. I also had a side of red beans and rice which were good, but not great.
I was expecting a lot more and was disappointed. The ambience was fine, the meal was fine, but it was just "fine".

We went to the BMOCA Avant Garden annual fundraiser last night. Amy and I are trustees of the museum and strong supports. 150 people showed up for the fundraiser, which was edgier this year than normal (and very fun). The art was cool, the dinner was very well done by the likes of Aji and Full Moon Grill, and the scene was a blast.

I wandered over from Quova and had lunch with three friends (Pat, Wendy, and Seth) at Cascal. It was a beautiful northern California day - the patio was full and buzzing. We sat inside and had an incredible tapas and paella lunch. The tapas sampler was great - a little meat centric (I'm a veggie), but still plenty of veggie stuff. I think had veggie paella, which was A+. Service was a little off, but that's easy to give them a pass on since they were swamped.
If you like Spanish food, this is a superb place for lunch.

I have a redeye to Boston tonight. I was at a party before I came to the airport, but somehow missed dinner. I was starving and wandered through the food court in the United Terminal. Mexican struck me as the most appealing and Andale was the only choice.
I had a generous veggie burrito with a side salad and chips (the salad and chips are included.) Service was fast - two minutes. The food was fresh and tasty. Nothing special, but certainly what I was expecting and hoping for.

We had dinner for 30 at Typhoon today. They gave us a separate area behind the bar - nicely secluded and well organized. They served us buffett style, which made things much easier for everyone. The food was top notch - tasty and fresh - although it was standard thai (e.g. nothing particularly special.) The service was good, although it started off a little slow (they didn't start cooking until the bulk of the people showed up.)
Overall, we were very happy. It was a nice change from the pre-board meeting seafood or steak dinner. We had three tables of 10 so the conversation was reasonably intimate (vs. one giant table where you can't really talk to anyone other than the people directly next to you.)

Amy has recently gotten turned on to Rhumba again - we hadn't gone for several years - but she had lunch there and was blown away by the gaspatcho. We had lunch today outside on the porch - it was a perfect Boulder April day (70 degrees) and all the sites where out in force. Rhumba has live music on Sunday's from 1 to 4 so we go to jam out to some rocking salsa. As expected, there were plenty of plantains and salsa stuff. I had the chili tofu for my main course - it was great. We left around 1:30 when the scene was starting to heat up - my guess is that the party went on all day today.

As hip, contemporary, and progressive as Boulder is, it's lacking in public art and theater spaces. The two main players in town are BMOCA (the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Dairy Center for the Arts.
The Dairy is a great, large building that houses a number of Boulder's arts organizations. It's central space is an excellent gathering / meeting space that regularly has outstanding exhibits of local artists (and occassionally not so local artists - like my mom - Cecelia Feld - www.studio7310.com). The theater is larger (seats a couple of hundred) and has edgy, contemporary, hilarious, and often excellent shows.
The Dairy is currently being run by Mollie Fager, who does an extraordinary job. If you are a Boulderite that has never been to the Dairy, look for a excute to go check it out.

Zolo is always hot and happening. It's a little off the beaten path - one of the better Boulder restaurants that is not within walking distance of the Pearl Street Mall. It's tucked away in a non-descript shopping center near Canyon and 28th, next to a movie theater.
The bar is always a few people deep on a Friday night and the outside patio is filled with people wearing not quite enough clothing (one of the joys of the scenery of Boulder.) Start with the guacamole - it's a standard and is excellent (if you aren't a guac fan, ask for the salsa sampler - or hell - just go for it and get both.)
The food is fresh and clever with a Mexican theme. I love the fish tacos and the corn chowder. Servings are large - you will walk away very full. We finished the evening with a banana cream pie with fudge sauce.
I have never been disappointed after a meal at Zolo.
