Ptarmigan Arts - on Pioneer Ave (the main street through downtown Homer) is cute and cuddly. The art isn't cutting edge - lots of nature and photography, but there are plenty of interesting things to look at and buy. There is a regular show, but it's a small part of the gallery. This should be a stop on any touristy trip - you'll probably pick up something if you are looking for a local souvenier, but it won't blow your socks off.

Bunnell Street Gallery is the best contemporary gallery in Homer - maybe in Alaska. It rivals many big city galleries for quality, even though the choices are local artist only. It's run as a non-profit and the gallery head - Asia - is an accomplished artist in her own right. On the first Friday of every month ("first Friday") there is an open gallery with a new exhibit - we went tonight and the place was packed. Definitely worth a visit.

Tonight was our first night in Homer. Since it's the July 4th weekend, it's very busy. So - we trolled around looking for a place and the Fresh Catch Cafe caught our eye. It's one of the obviously new places this summer in the first boardwalk / pier area on the right next to Frosy Bear's Ice Cream. The service was great - two nice young girls - and quick - we had a bowl of chowder within 2 minutes of entering the restaurant. Amy and I both had the pasta with shrimp and halibut - delicious. Simple, quick, relatively inexpensive - and healthy. We'll be back.

Amy and I go out to a nice dinner on the first day of every month (we call it "Life Dinner"). We had a very nice time at Dahlia Lounge last night. The setting was calm, quiet, and relaxing. Our waiter was superb - very friendly, fun, but non-obtrusive. We started out with the fish app sampler - delicious - and ended up getting another order of the salmon. I had a vegetable samosa and then the tofu and veggies for dinner; Amy had crab cakes. Very enjoyable, tasty, and a good choice for a casual romantic dinner.

Yahoo hosted a private event for some Gnomedexers last night and were nice enough to invite me. The setting was nice and private; service was great (and very invisible), and the food was solid. Overall, this is a very good place for a group of 20 people or so to have a private dinner.

Amy and I are in Seattle a few times a year. We stay at The W Hotel whenever we are here. The hotel is edgy and modern - typical W - and we like it a lot. The rooms are large and as you get above the 15th floor have incredible views (2002 is our favorite room.) The bar scene is usually hopping, the appetizers - especially the "Sexy Fries" are awesome, and the service is nice. There's a small workout room, but I usually just put on my running shoes and head down to the water and then take a right on Alaskan way - it's a nice long (> 4 miles) boardwalk that goes through a park at about mile 2. Finally, there's a Starbucks literally across the street so it's easy to bring my princess her vente latte first thing in the morning after I get back from my run.

We had an outstanding meal at Barolo last night with friends from the Denver Art Museum. The restaurant setting is nice - comfortable / casual but upscale, with great light from the wall of windows facing the street. We had a large table (there were seven of us), but we didn't feel out of place or notice anyone else in the restaurant even thought the place was packed.
The food is upscale northern Italian - a traditional multi-stage meal (appetizer, salad, pasta, main dish, dessert.) The pacing was perfect - the food was delicious. I had a prawn and fried baby artichoke salad, green salad with goad cheese, and pasta with mushrooms and truffles. I finished up with a yellow blossom tea - I was too full for dessert.
While we don't drink wine, they claim to have the third largest Italian wine list in the US. Several other folks with us were wine drinkers - they all seemed to havea great time.

I had a nice business lunch here with a friend I hadn't seen in several years. The restaurant is cute and comfortable - kind of a rustic oasis in the middle of downtown Denver. The service was good and fast, the restaurant was very subdued feeling even as it filled up (mellow lunch crowd), and the food was high end but not overindulgent. I had raviolli filled with carrots and topped with green beans - it was excellent. I'll definitely be back.

Turley's is one of the key local places for breakfast. They moved a few years ago to a new location (took over the old TGIF restaurant) and have really made it their own. It's a comfortable place - dark wood everywhere - and feels very hippy / Boulder. The service is great, the range of food is great, and there are a bunch of special / unique dishes. If you are a tea drinker, you should try their special house blend (spice and orange). The portions are large and generally healthy - if you feel a little guilt you can always get a shot of wheatgrass.
