The Sad Remnants of a Historic Park 8/14/2005

Those from the area may know the unfortunate history of Lakemont Park. At one time, it was the premiere place for amusement in the area. When I was a child growing up on the 70's and 80's, it remained a quaint, wooded park that was great for family entertainment. Then at some point (I believe it was in the late 80's) a local candy maker bought it with the aspiration of turning it into a theme park. Trees were cut down, grass was replaced with concrete, and the charm of the place disappeared. To top it off, the new owner's concept failed (largely due to a lack of capital) and the park headed downhill fast. Luckily, a local contractor bought it and began making improvements. Unfortunately, it still has a long way to go. The highlights are the historic Leap the Dips Rollercoaster and the bumper cars. There is also a little train to ride that is great for kids. There is a waterpark that is great for hot days. But other than that, most of the rides are similar to carnival attractions. The low admission price is good for families on a budget, and on Wednesdays it is only a dollar to enter! For a buck, you will definitely get your money's worth! more
