My husband and I used Rick Holtz of Holtz and Assoc. real estate as our agent when we bought our house and were very pleased with the experience.
Unlike many other real estate agents, Rick is also a licensed home appraiser so he knew a great deal about home construction and what to look for in a home beyond the obvious.
He asked a lot of questions about what we were looking for in a home and contacted us often when new homes went on the market. He did the looking for us and took us through about 12 homes before we found the one that was right for us.
We have been very pleased with our home and would recommend Rick Holtz to anyone buying or selling a home.

We just had "Asphalt Sealing" seal our blacktop driveway and we were very pleased with their work and their rates.
I called them because I have seen their signs next to a number of driveways in town. The owner/operator is named Kevin and he works with his two teenage sons. They did a fantastic job cleaning and prepping the surface before applying the sealant. They used hand brushes on all areas that were close to landscaping and edging and didn't get a drop of sealant on anything but the driveway.
The driveway looks great and their prices were very reasonable. I will hire them again and would recommend them to anyone.

We hired The Renovators to finish our basement last summer and had an excellent experience with them.
They helped us to design the space and gave us several estimates based on several different options.
There were several things that we wanted to do ourselves in order to keep the costs down, and the guys at the Renovators were always willing to work with us.
We also decided to change a few things after the project was already started and the Renovators were very easy to work with, made the changes without a problem, and did not add to the cost.
In fact, the final bill actually came in a couple of hundred dollars less than we expected.
I was very pleased with their work and would not hesitate to hire them again and I would recommend them to anyone!

For the first few years of my marriage, I swore off Wolf Furniture. My visits to the store were often disappointing, with the furniture being boring at best and ugly at worst.
But I went in the store again several years ago looking for a rocker. While I didn't like the selection of rockers, I was very impressed with a new line that they carried by Broyhill that looks like antique furniture reproductions. And I was equally impressed by very high quality wicker furniture.
The salespeople work on commission and can be a bit overbearing. But they offer a wide selection so it's definitely worth a look.

If you can judge a florist by the aesthetics of their shop, Creative Expressions is a wonderful store. The quaint shop is beautifully decorated with artfully arranged dried flowers, hanging freely from ribbons or adorning baskets. The shop smells wonderful and is fun just to browse through. I have gotten several cut flower arrangements from the store, all of which were nice quality and lasted for a reasonable amount of time. The prices seem to be very competitive.

I saw Dr. Rowell a few years ago due to chronic headaches. She was very nice and her hours were quite accommodating. Her treatments made me feel better at times but ultimately weren't the solution to my problem. But my complaint came when I tried to stop going. She wouldn't give me a home exercise program, which I felt was very important considering the problems that I was having (I don't remember her reasoning). And she tried to tell me that going to the chiropractor regularly for adjustments should be something that I did for the rest of my life as a maintenance program. I am in the health professions and strongly disagreed with her recommendations on this matter. So if you need to see a chiropractor, she really is a nice one. But when you're ready to be discharged, stand your ground.

My husband and I bought carpet and laminate flooring from DeGol brothers in 2004 and had a very good experience with them.
The selection of carpet and flooring at their Wye Switches location is fantastic. In fact, you might even say that there are too many choices, since it took us about two weeks to decide on the carpet!
The salespeople were very helpful, and let us take home many samples.
We also had them install the carpet (we did the laminate flooring ourselves) and were very happy with the work...they arrived on time, and did a nice job.
So if you are looking for a great selection and good installation, check out DeGol's.

If you thought all gas stations were alike, you would be wrong. Here are three reasons to buy your gas at Reighard's:
1. It is the oldest continuously operating gas station in the United States. Honest! In fact, they were featured several years ago in American Heritage Magazine for this distinction.
2. They are an old-time full service gas station for the same price as self service (I swear that they have 6 guys working three pumps!)
3. They still wash your windows (front and rear) with every gas purchase...and with the current price of gas, shouldn't you at least get your windows cleaned?
Anyway, for these reasons I try to buy my gas at Reighards whenever possible and if you are ever anywhere near Reighards on 6th ave you should too!

I have an aunt that loves bingo and goes to all the local church bingo games and she likes St. Rose the best.
They play every Tuesday and Friday and have 30 regular games and 7 jackpot games. You can play all regular games for as little as $6.00 and they always give out the maximum payout allowed by state law at every session.
They have a kitchen with good food, are handicapped accessible and also have both smoking and non-smoking rooms. Plus, it benefits a great Catholic parish!
If you like bingo, then definitely check out St. Rose!

The Altoona Mirror, our local paper, usually takes about 10 minutes to read because it's coverage is so thin. They rely heavily on wire reports and ads to fill their pages.
By far, the best group of writers at this paper come from the sports department. Cory Giger covers the Altoona Curve for the paper and is an excellent baseball writer and I usually enjoy his stories. Neil Rudel's coverage of Penn State football is very good. And John Mehno, even though he is quite the curmudgion, and I would love for him to write something postive evey once in a while, is still usually interesting.
My only major complaint of the sports department is that they tend to ignore local high school soccer, swimming and other "minor" sports because of the focus on football and basketball. While I understand that these smaller sports should not get equal coverage, I do think they could do a much better job of giving some coverage.
The news department rarely does any significant investigative reporting, and the editorial page can be counted on to toe the Republican party line and rarely, if ever, questions our local politicians (despite the poor economic growth of our region).
While I have notices some small improvement in the news department with a recent turnover in staff, I still think they have a long way to go.
While I am a subscriber and rely on it for local news, outside of the sports department, I do not consider this a first rate newspaper.
