This mall used to have a great selection of stores but now it doesn't. There is a Kay B toy store that has a decent selection and an Express that carries trendy styles but for the most part, shoppers ignore this mall and head to nearby Macy's.
There is a decent food court on the lowest level with a new seating area that boasts plasma tvs showing mostly sports and other entertainment-oriented shows. The stores in the food court have aggressive tactics that include free samples (especially from the Asian cuisines).
Also, there's a water massage bed that people seem to flock to and a photo booth producing those quaint four series of black and white photos. So, there are some old school elements that are nifty about this place.

Every floor has a theme and different design scheme. My favorite floors are the beauty and shoe floors. When I walk through the beauty products and counters, I just want to buy everything up. Great layout and wonderful if a bit snooty service.
The best time to go is when they have their big shoe sales. One can get a decent Manolo pair for a discounted yet still steep price.
Try the spa!

This is not Banres and Noble so don't expect huge discounts, fancy magazines and cofffee. This is stricly the basics.
There's a location near NYU so it's a great place to find an obscure book for lit class.

This is a small boutique hair salon located a couple of blocks from Magnolia. It is very nice-looking inside, red walls and velvet upholstery.
The service is attentive if not a bit erratic. If you like to feel important and don't want to feel like a number at a large salong, then this is the place for you.
The stylists and receptionist are very friendly and everyone is eager to please. I've had my hair cut there but mosly I go for color. They are warm, friendly, have great magazines and almost always offer great wine (there's a cute wine bar next door).
The prices are market rate - so you're not going to get a bargain here. But you will get good color. The only downside besides price is that the salon is very small, so be careful what you say, almost everyone can hear you.

I had read many good reviews about the Ling salon mostly in fashion magazines touting which model frequented this salon. Well, I signed up for a series of treatments including facials but I was disappointed.
First of all, when you're getting a facial, you'd hope that the facialist would have good skin. Well, she didn't. So i was a bit put off when she said she uses the same products and treatments. Obviuosly, they're not working because she was very zitty and trying to hide behind a heavy pan of makeup.
Nonetheless, because I had paid for a series of treatments, I continued going and I didn't have a choice but to see the facialist that was assigned to me.
I didn't really notice a difference in my skin from the treatments but I do think that some of their products are good - even though once you wash it off, the effect is pretty much gone.

I love this store! It is dangerously near my apartment. Jacque Torres is a genius. His chocolates and chocolate creations are simply divine. If you love chocolate, then this is the store for you.
His store is huge and there is an area to sit and enjoy your purchases. There's also an area to watch the bakers create the chocolate. Truly an interesting sight especially for foodies.
Dark chocolate is good for you so go ahead and indulge.
The only downside is the price - tres expensive but worth it.

The Bathroom is a cute little store located on a tree-lined street in Greenwich Village (with a few famous celebrity neighbors).
The store is filled with great-smelling, luxe products from around the world. I love walking in and just taking in the lovely aromas. The shop has a very intimate yet airy feel to it.
Although there are many lovely, unique items, they do carry some well-known brands too. Obviously, this is a store for those who like to support boutiques like this one and not cater to the retail chains. I'd say the only downside is are the prices - they tend to be a bit on the pricey side and there aren't many discounts avaialble.
All in all, a lovely store.

This kind of friendly, neighborhood bookstore reminds me of the one from the movie You've Got Mail. I'm amazed that a store like this can exist given the influx of Barnes & Noble's around the city (there's one located two blocks from this store).
But Three Lives is a great store - they always have hte best books available and displayed in their windows (I love walking by and seeing what's new and noteworthy).
I'd say the only downsides are the availability of some books and the pricing (they dont' discount heavily like B&N does). Also, sigh, I hate to say it, no cafe and no real sitting areas to enjoy. But the staff is very smart and knowledgeable so if you're a real book lover, then this store is for you. Don't just pass it by.

I really like the skin care products at Mario Badescu. I first read about them in a fashion magazine and about the celebrities who swear by some of the products - Liv Tyler supposedly loves the pink zit-clearing lotion (as do I!). I first bought the products at Bendel's, a cute boutique on 5th (they sell everything except shoes).
What I really like are the varied lines they have for each skin type (it almost feels like customized care) and the high quality of the products. The kiwi scrub feels and smells amazing! Also, the prices are very reasonable compared to other skincare lines (very cheap compared to Chanel and a few steps above Clinique).
The facials are some of the best in the city but finding the right facialist is trial and error. The girls that work in front tend to be young and snooty but don't let that deter you from experiencing some of the best skin care products. So if you don't want to deal with snooty service, you can always buy the products online or at a store like Bendel's.

I have to say I believed all the hype surrounding Bliss until I went there. You do need to show up early to enjoy the best part of the salon, the wine and food and the sauna. Otherwise, it's kind of a disappointment after that. Although my facialist was very nice and the treatment seemed fine, she did try to push a lot of the bliss products on me. The facial itself was already pricey and I couldn't afford any of their expensive products. In addition, the salon is kind of a mess in terms of the relaxing area where the food and drinks are kept. I don't know who maintains that area but it seems to be ignored. Last but not least, the hefty bill although not surprising is still pretty lofty. My advice: try Bliss if someone gives you a gift certificate. Otherwise, there are many other good places to try that aren't so expensive. It doesn't live up to all the hype.
