Ansonia Pharmacy is located on 6th Avenue and 10th Street in the West Village (across from the Jefferson Library).
It is a bright, airy store but a bit on the small side.
The shelves are stocked with lots of nice products but they tend to be priced a bit higher than other stores.
But this is the type of pharmacy where one will receive personalized service.
They remember your name and greet you the next time you stop by.
If you're looking for a friendly, neighborhood pharmacy, then Ansonia's for you.

This legendary pharmacy, in the heart of Greenwich Village, has been providing health and beauty aids for over 100 years. Clientele includes celebrity neighbors like SJP (she's a regular).
There's a very good selection of shampoos (a lot of cool foreign brands), moisturizers, makeup (including their own Alchemy brand), hair brushes (Mason Pearson) along with hair accessories and stockings.
There is a very good selection of men's beauty products too.
It's worth a visit to peruse the shelves to see what's new, hip and in stock.
Also, great scented candles, many from Italy, to choose from.

Have you been dreaming about owning a pair of Manolo Blahniks like every other sex and the city girl? Well, now you can.
Gabay's Outlet is a small, dusty storefront in the East Village (close to 13th-14th Street).
It's a family-run business and yes, they do have authentic Manolos along with Prada, Gucci and several other well-heeled brands. I was so excited to hear about this store only to be let down.
My biggest complaint is that the merchandise isn't new. So, yes those are Manolos but they're like several seasons ago - you can tell because the styles are old and the colors not the norm (didn't see a black pair in sight). Weird heels and odd colors like bright pink, orange, purple, etc.
So if you don't mind owning a very old, oddly colored yet still stylish Manolo Blahnik, then this is the place for you. Filled with cast-offs, these shoes are authentic but not very hip. But what can you expect when they get their merchandise from department stores? All the good shoes, styles and sizes are always taken.

This is where the professionals shop!
Makeup mania is located on the lower east side (near the corner of Allen & Houston).
They sell professional brushes and makeup that makeup artists use for shoots, movies and on models and celebrities.
They also offer free makeup workshops for aspiring artists or for anyone who could use a lesson in putting on their makeup better (and who couldn't?).
Prices are reasonable.

This salon bills itself as upscale but it's really not. I've been there a few times and each time I've been disappointed with the results.
Located in the Flatiron district, this below street level salon does not deliver.
The prices are high and the service isn't. You don't get what you pay for. Once, I asked to have my highlights done - my roots to be touched up. All they had to was match the blonde which I didn't think was that hard to do. Instead, I got orange hair on top and blonde on the bottom. I looked like a clown. I had to complain to have it redone (at no charge) but by then, my hair was already damaged.
I would give this salon a more negative rating but I'm hoping that my color experience doesn't reflect the potential talent at the salon.
Go if you must but be forewarned; you may be disappointed.

Located on the top floor of Bergdorf Goodman's (the ultra sleek department store for the rich and famous), this salon is a must-vist for anyone. A lot of the regular clientele include celebrities but you too can feel like a star, at a price, of course.
John Barrett is known for hair, great blowouts, beautiful blonde color (this salon was the basis of the book, Bergdorf Blondes), and great service. All of this comes at a price, but it is worth it to try at least once.
If you can't afford it, then try their student nights. Last time I checked, you can call up and get an appointment by a student/hairstylist in training for a fraction of the cost (about $40 to $60). It's worth waiting for.

Jin Soon is obsessed with nails. This is a great place to visit for a very good manicure and pedicure. They really know what they're doing here and it's a favorite among the neighborhood celebrities.
They also offer nail design but most clients stick to traditional manis/pedis.
I also find that they have a better palette of colors to choose from.
It's a small salon and they don't allow cell phone use which is good because it adds to the quiet, tranquil feel of the place.
The only downside? Price. It's not cheap unlike the local Korean nail salons throughout the city. But this is better quality.

This is a great spa that focuses on relaxation. In addition to their many spa offerings, they also offer Yoga and core fusion classes and acupuncture. There's also an organic tea and coffee bar and they sell lots of skincare products.
When I'm really feeling stressed out, I head to Exhale. I'll take a Yoga class to relax and then have a massage. Afterwards, I enjoy a relaxing and detoxing tea from the cafe while enjoying the Central Park locale.
It's one of the best places to go to escape the city without leaving the city.

Doma, which means home in Czech, is a small, neighborhood coffee shop offering hipsters, locals and writers a place to have a great cup of coffee. The menu at Doma also features breakfast items and lunch/dinner choices.
Go there early and secure a spot or have a drink on the bench outside.
Sitting inside, the huge glass windows offer a glimpse of the passerby and 7th avenue traffic.
Doma is a great place to meet someone for a cup of coffee, meet a blind date, or have friends meet up before you head out. It's casual, friendly and inexpensive.

The perfect place to go before you hit the beach. But it is pricey - about $55 for a wax last time I was there.
You can also get your nails done. They have nice manicures and pedicures and they take their time so don't go here if you're in a rush. Plus, you'll pay more here for a mani/pedi than most other places (about $40 for a mani and $60 for a pedi). Might be cheaper to fly to Brazil.
