This is one of the best places for buying a glider or crib in the Bay Area. They have a huge selection of styles and color combos and there is something to fit everyone's budget. There is also a nice baby gear store attached which carries a lot of the higher end strollers, car seats and diaper bags that you won't find at mass market chains like Babies R Us.
The biggest problem here is that if something is not in stock (and that pretty much applies to all of the cribs and gliders) it has to be ordered. So order with a couple of months' leeway to make sure it is here in time for your baby!

This is one of the few places left in the Bay Area where you can go look at the higher quality.more expensiev baby gear in person. Babies R Us seems to be watering down their selection to the least sommon denominator and smoe other baby specialty stores fell victim to the economic downturn.
However you won't find any deals here. You will pay full price for everything and although people tell me that there are 'sales' I have only ever seen this on items that are from last season.
It's worth a good browse, but don't expect to fnd any bargains!

This is really a fun place. When the Beach Boys wrote all those songs about the Beach they were thinking of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and you can see why. It's got all of the 'traditional' fun: the nicest beach in the Bay Area, rides and concession stands where kids can find junk food and 'priceless' treasures. Of course there is also the sand and the swimming, both of which make it worth a visit.
This is the kind of place you *must* make a pilgrammage to at least once a summer.

There aren't many true beaches in the immediate Bay Area. Santa Cruz is obviously the best one but if you don't want to travel so far and you're more into the 'beach experience' than swimming then Crab Cove is the place for you. It's easy for kids to walk along the water, enjoy the views and pick up shells or rocks at the edge of the water. There are also some good exhibits at the visitor's center and some nice hiking trails.
This is also a good place for kite-flying!
Best of all, this is somewhat off the beatn path so it is not nearly as crowded as, say, Ocean Beach in the City.

The Coyote Point Museum is a little different from the usual kids' museum but it is still interesting and fun for all ages. Even my toddler can find things to interest him, He especially likes the point of view of landing in an airplane! There are exhibits and interactive fun for everyone.
One of the best things about this museum is that I get free admission with other memberships that I already have (Oakland Zoo, Happy Hollow, etc.). This makes it a real bargain and frankly encourages me to try something new!
This place is worth a visit at least once.

Tilden Park is one of those things you don't know about until you have lived in the area or been clued in by a local. It's a wonderful place for walks and hikes but can be fun for kids too. There is a beautiful old merry-go-round for the youngest of riders, as well as a steam train ride that is sure to get all little ones excited. The baby farm animals are also a great treat for everyone!
This is also a fun place for a picnic or just enjoying the ootdoors and views.

Games of Berkeley is a good compromise between a true gamer's store and a mainstream game/toy store, It has a lot of things that appeal to non-gaming familes as well as some 'transitional' games to invite such browsers to the world of more serious games. There is also a good selection of European games that are difficult to find at mass retailers. There is a decently sized section for roleplayers with books and miniatures from different publishers.
Conveniently located across from the BART station, Games of Berkeley is worth a good browse (at the very least) now and then,

Although it has the word hobby in its name Gator Games ia all about game and comics. For such a small store they have a fantastic selection of games from every genre, including all of those great games from Europe that never seem to be mainstream enough here to be carried at Toys R Us (think Settlers of Catan). For roleplayers there is a good selection of books and of course they cater to comic and CCG buyers as well. They are constantly holding Magic or Pokeman or Yu Gi Oh tournaments and the know how to make it fun,
Best of all, Gator is famous for their 20% off sales where pretty much the entire store is on sale. COmbine that with no shipping cost and this is a very good LOCAL alternative to online game shopping.

As a gaming enthusiast it is always hardest to find a good local store that sells games and gaming supplies. While it is easy to shop on the internet, it is often more fun to see games for yourself and try things out. At Scenario they know their stuf. You can ask questions and get real answers.
Scenario also carries a big selection of hobby materials, particularly for those who are interested in trains. For some reason, Scenario also sells scout uniforms. I guess this supplements their income?
The big negative is that you arely find any deals, You will pay full retail price for everything you buy, but hey, at least there's no shipping!

Bamboola is essentially a children's play center. You pay a modest admission fee and your kids cna run around this giant play area. There is water play, a rock climbing wall, a wall maze a house and grocery store play area and a place for crawlers. One of the nicer things is thatthere is a cafe in the middle with a great view of everything so you can sit and watch your child run around all of the different activities and take a needed rest. You are also welcome to participate in the activities with your child.
More hands-on and cheaper than Chuck E Cheese, this place is worth a visit if you are lokoing for something different.
