Highlands Bar and Grill: A destination for Birmingham visitors
Tuesday, April 25, 2006
I am not from Birmingham but have eaten at Highlands several times over the past ten or twenty years. It remains one of my favorite restaurants. Frank Stitt's food isn't fussy...just damn good elegantly combined preparations and presentations of the dishes focusing on the very freshest and best local and regional ingredients. He isn't afraid to pair turnip greens and grits with a Niman Ranch strip. There is a nice wine list that have prices at a modest markup. The last time I ate there we had a very nice Telegraph Rhone. Chilton County (Alabama) peaches were in season. One of the wait staff suggested Karen try a Bellini. She absolutely loved it. I don't typically care for fruit-based drinks, but I have to admit...the drink was great. I asked the waiter how long he had worked at Highlands. He said since before it opened.
I look forward to my next visit to Highlands as I remember my last.
