Hands-on Fun Educational Civil War Museum 8/7/2005

Pamplin Park is no ordinary museum! Everything they have is interactive and hands-on. The main feature of the museum building is the "Duty Called Me Here" section, where you get to pick a soldier (there are various ones to chose from) and then you are given a headset to listen to as you walk through different areas that are set up exactly like life was in the Civil War camps. On the headset you will hear different information about what you are looking at and then at certain locations you will hear portions of letters or diary entries written by your particular soldier. By the time you finish the journey through the camps area, you will know whether or not your soldier survived the war. Since all the soldiers and their letters are true, it is especially touching to learn the outcome of the one you chose to follow. There is no extra charge for this exhibit, so go through a few times and learn about the other soldiers. Everyone who works here is really great, being very helpful and knowledgable about the Civil War. It really is like stepping back in time and being there yourself. more
