I like Books Inc fine, but my favorite part of the store is actually the used book annex next door. They have a surprisingly large art & architecture collection (sort of my litmus test for a used book store). And the people behind the counter are fittingly gruff and knowledgeable--I always like a little guff with my used books, as if the sales staff is none too happy to see the book leave!
Great place to hang out for a coffee at anytime of the day or night. Open to 11pm every night. Always find lots of students studying there. The food is great too - light and healthy.

Most folks go for the music, I go for the videos. I can rarely leave without dropping about a hundred bucks on DVDs, and yes, the occasional CD. The music sorting is a little eclectic, but there's always the folks at the info booth to tell you where _they_ have categorized an artist. They take trade-ins, of course, but it's been my experience that some clerks are a little more generous and forgiving than others with the credit-to-useless ratio.
They really crank the stuff out there. If any other place did as good a job on such a ginormous scale, I'd have knocked them down to four stars. Even having worked there 4 years as a buyer (SF & Berkeley) can't diminish my love for the place.
Amoeba really is undervalued for it's video section too, one of the country's best. Mad Kudo's to my great friend Wayne for making it so, so boss.
A big old barn full of lots & lots of music.
Works for me

This place is very overrated. I went here twice. Once on a Saturday. The restaurant was not packed but our food was so so ( I had Salmon). Our dessert was a crepe with Chocolate sauce, but the dough that was not covered by the chocolate tasty so salty!! This would expected from a 1st year chef but not from a restaurant that dares to mask itself in such a glowing reputation. My advice is to save your money and head elsewhere. To be fair, the service was excellent both times and the atmosphere is relaxed but fun and the outdoor bar is very elegant

You really feel like you're eating healthy when you go to the Bay Leaf. Everything is organic, prepared fresh, and Vegan. While I still eat meat, the food tastes great--you can't even tell the difference. Really great soups, specials, and wraps, using lots of ingredients you've probably never heard of. Definiitely worth it.
Food here is inconsistent (dish by dish, not night by night). Some things I really like and some I find bland. However, they are open very late -- midnight or even 1am. Find the dishes you like, and save this place for when Palo Alto closes before you've eaten. On El Camino, down by San Antonio Rd.

Porridge King is one of those odd suburban restaurants that could only happen in The Bay Area. Sure, there's real Chinese food in the city, but Porridge King serves it up on a clean table and lickety-split.
The menu is large, the ingredients are fresh, and the prices are right. Anyone looking for their Hong Kong Chinese food fix will find what they want here: fried noodles, wonton soup, and the speciality of the house -- congee, or Chinese rice porridge.
What you won't find here is ambience, neither upscale or slumming. It's just plain good food, located in a suburban strip mall.

Open late, friendly staff, and fantastic food--what more can you ask for? My girl friend and I found Chef Liu's back in 2002, and pined painfully for them while they were closed from December '03 to August '04, while they moved locations just a few doors up. We made our first trip back, and while the decor has changed, the staff and the food hasn't! I especially recommend their egg rolls and the orange peel beef! And the chix fried rice...and the cashew chix, and well, it goes on like that!

IMO, this is a great thai restaurant. I don't love thai food, but I love this place. The owner is there every night and very friendly, a real family atmosphere. My brother likes it enough that he goes every Sat. night. It's not exactly a cheap hole in the wall, but it's not expensive. Favorite Dishes: Green Beans and Chicken in Black Bean Sauce, Spicy Wontons (appetizer), and Orange Peel Beef. Tell the owner what kind of things you like, and he'll probably come up with something good for you. Also on Calif. Ave there's a real hole in the wall that only sells egg rolls, pot stickers and pork buns that some people swear by. Finally, in downtown PA there's Jing Jing that is pretty good also

This is an incredible place. Really good food, fun atmosphere, and the prices are low. For $3.52 last night I got 16 pieces of avocado maki to take home for my dinner. Most places would charge that much for 6 pieces! They have incredible variety, and you can get a feast for the same price that most places would charge for a meal. This little hidden jewel is worth it. Open dinnertimes only, closed on Sun nights.

Cafe Riace is small and family-owned but don't let that fool you. The tables spill out in to the courtyard surrounded by fountains and foliage and the food is fabulous. They have a wine collection to be envious of and the heartiest, most meticulously made dishes you can ask for. Be sure to wrap up your meal with one of the perfect desserts and a glass of the grappa made on site. It's not unheard of for regular diners to be found by the kitchen enjoying grappa and conversation with the family at the end of the night.

They have a great selection of traditional egg breakfasts. My favorite would be either the Gaucho or the Esmerelda. both of them are egg burritos with salsa, the Esmerelda is vegetarian and the Gaucho I usually get with chorizo. The fruit and vegetables are always very fresh, and the muffins.....I could write three or four paragraphs about the muffins, but I'll spare you the rhetoric. Try them yourself, you won't be disappointed.
