Houghton Market is located on NE 68th in (you guessed it) the Houghton Neighborhood of Kirkland.
Inside you'll find your standard grocery store fare; however, the deli here is above average. They have everything from sandwiches to pizza, and I've never had anything from them that wasn't good.
The wine selection at Houghton is very good as well, and most wine enthusiasts will find something here to interest them.
Produce is usually good, and the meat selection is good as well. Check-outs are usually very well staffed, the clerks are friendly and fast.
While I've never done my "major" weekly grocery shopping here, Houghton Market is a good place to stop in for lunch or to grab a little something...

Kidd Valley is located right across from Houghton Beach Park on Lake Washington Blvd. in Kirkland.
After a day of sun & sand, head across the street to Kidd Valley for some burgers, onion rings and shakes. Service is a tad slower than other fast food restaurants as everything is made-to-order. You place your order at the counter, sit down, and they call you when your food's ready or bring it to you (depending on staffing).
Food is a step above standard fast food places, and the price is right. Our kids love to eat here, too, and they do have a kids' menu.
We like to sit outside on sunny days and enjoy the lake view.

Daniel's Broiler in Bellevue is located on the 21st Floor of the Hyatt building downtown.
We received some gift cards for the place a while back and just got around to using them.
We were greeted and seated by a polite and informative hostess. Our table was right by the window with a lovely view of Lake Washington and Seattle beyond.
We ordered some wine (good list - something for everyone) and their shrimp and crab appetizers. The best thing about the crab is that it comes already out of the shell; just dip (or not) and eat. Both appetizers were quite good.
Since Daniel's is known for their steak, we both had filets. Both were delicious cuts of meat, cooked just the way we wanted them.
Dessert was also to be had (since we had those gift cards). I don't recall what my husband got (but he liked it), and I got the chocolate-dipped strawberries with Grand Marnier in them. They were very good, and with my coffee, just the right ending to a nice meal.
When all was said and done, this meal cost us about $250 including tip, but it was worth it since we had the gift cards, and would be worth it for a special occasion or spendy dinner.
The service is quite solicitous -- our water glasses were kept full, our empty plates whisked away. Our server was friendly, helpful and polite.
All in all, an enjoyable meal.

SoulFood Books recently relocated from right next door to Victor's coffee to the shopping center on Redmond Way next to Ben Franklin Crafts.
They have a unique collection of spiritual books - including a wonderful children's section - as well as fun gift ideas and beautiful cards.
They sell candles, inspirational gifts, scarves, crystals, and other unique, oftentimes locally made, objects.
Also, at this location, they've added their own coffee shop and hold classes, live music, author events and more.
Staff is friendly, shopping is peaceful, and you're sure to find something interesting for those on your list who are hard to shop for.

Cosi is a new restaurant in Redmond Town Center that is very similar to Panera. You order at the counter, pay, then have a seat, and someone will bring you your order.
They have a pretty good variety of salads and sandwiches and even pizza. Their "specialty" is their flatbread, which is quite good.
Our family had lunch there last weekend, and I ordered their Greek salad with an added chicken breast. (You can get extra protein on any of their salads for $1.50.) The salad was quite fresh and good, but I have to say I didn't get much chicken for my extra $1.50.
My husband said his sandwich was mediocre, and the pizza my kids shared was a hit with one and a bomb with the other.
Service was friendly and fast. Atmosphere was fine, although not as cozy as Panera up the street. Overall, a fine dining experience but nothing fantastic.

Whenever I have guests in from out of town, I enjoy taking them over to the Château Ste Michelle Winery in Woodinville.
It's located on a beautiful piece of property with lovely buildings and roaming peacocks.
Take a tour of the winery to learn a little about the place, and then make a stop at the bar for a tasting. Be sure to ask if they have any wines available to taste that are only sold there at their retail shop.
They have a lovely collection of items for sale, so save some time peruse those. Pick up a little snack in the shop, get a bottle of wine and picnic on the grounds after your tour and tasting.
What a way to spend an afternoon!

My husband and I went to Ruth's Chris in Bellevue after his mother recommended it. (I guess this should have been my first clue, but I digress.)
Because we had a newborn at the time, our reservation was for earlier in the evening, so the dining room was relatively empty. We were seated directly outside the kitchen doors. After asking to be moved, we were kindly taken to another table near a window.
While the decor was fine, the view out the window of the downtown Bellevue Bartell Drugs left a little to be desired, but again, I digress.
The cocktail I ordered (dirty martini) was excellent. Our waiter, again, excellent.
The food - we both ordered steaks - was quite good and cooked to our satisfaction. The sides, which do not come with your meal and cost extra, were nothing to write home about. We also had coffee and dessert, which were both fine as well.
My problem with Ruth's Chris is that they honestly charge out the wazoo for something you can get at a better price at dozens and dozens of other restaurants. We knew it would be expensive, but I suppose we were expecting a whole lot more for the money.

After reading all the wonderful reviews about Zoe here on Judy's Book, we decided to give it a try, and people! It did NOT disappoint!
Fabulous, attentive, polite and fun staff (we loved our waiter!), delicious food, and a lovely atmosphere made this one of the best nights out I've had in a long time.
We had a fabulous mozzarella appetizer that was their special, a delicious pear salad, and the halibut with cous cous that was to die for. We brought in our own bottle of wine, and had them decant it for us, but they had great looking wine & drink menus.
Can't say enough about the service here. Outstanding.

So this is a little cafe in the Westin where you go in, order at the counter, sit down, and they bring you your order.
We stood at the counter for about 10 minutes in a line, other customers did their thing and went to sit. When my turn happened, I stood at the counter without being acknowledged for about 5 minutes.
I understand busy, but SAY something to me while I'm standing there. ACKNOWLEDGE that I'm waiting.
The tables were filthy and needed to be bussed, the service was awful. They need to staff this place better.
Can't comment much on the food because after standing there forever, I decided to just get a bagel - not toasted - and it was fine.

Stopped in at the Queen City Grill for a drink recently and found it just OK.
The decor is nice, candles on the table & bar were a nice touch, the music they had playing was enjoyable enough, and my glass of wine was a very generous pour.
So what was the problem?
Well, every employee in the place was drinking except the poor guy behind the grill who was whipping up other patrons' meals.
The manager and bartenders had a loud and adolescent conversation right in front of us about who said what to the women at the end of the bar about whom.
Also, my friends and I weren't pounding drinks down, and one of the bartenders was giving us a hard time about it. ("Can I get you another glass of water to go with your first round, ladies?" "Still on your first round?" "Big drinkers, huh?") I mean, c'mon now.
There are better places to stop in for a drink.
