Dreamhaven is truly a mecca to comic book and sci-fi fans, many have come from around the world to see the place in person and to bask in its geek aura.
This fanatic following is due in part to its fabulous selection and in part to the fact that just about anyone who is anyone in the world of sci fi and fantasy has stopped by for a reading and/or book signing. Famous names such as Douglas Adams, Orson Scott Card, and William Gibson have all graced Dreamhaven's doorstep, and Neil Gaiman used to show up nearly every other week.
They used to have another store near the U of MN campus (on 4th St. in Dinkytown), but this location closed in 2003.

Uncommon Gardens was started by a former ad exec that decided to switch from the fast lane to the garden path.
Uncommon Gardens is a fun place to browse. The main building looks like something out of the English Countryside, with its shakes siding, wrought iron, and cute stone benches.
The plant selection is somewhat on the small side, and while it tends slightly towards the exotic, there is a fair amount of common plants as well.
The prices are average to fairly high during the regular season, but towards the end of summer, they have some pretty decent sales.

Malmborg's, now in business for 45 years, carries plants and shrubs similar to a lot of other nurseries around town.
What really sets them apart, however, is their yearly spring open house, usually held in late April.
At the open house this year, their small perennials were 2 for 1, and their larger plants and shrubs were 25% off.
The sale is a great way to kick off your planting season-especially since other nurseries are charging premium prices for their plants at this time of year.

Red Lure Red is really a microcosm of what Uptown Minneapolis should be like. It is a locally owned modern furnishings store, started by two interior designer friends, that brings a clean, clever design sensibility that is usually found only in more cosmopolitan environments such as New York or Paris.
Their display pieces featuring designers such as blu dot and phillip stark are always carefully coordinated and wonderfully thought out.
Should you require it, they also offer complete interior design services.
Unlike 99.9% of what you find in Minneapolis, this boutique would not be out of place in Soho or the Filmore district of San Francisco.

This store is a fun place to browse, reminds me a little bit of the defunct Prince store that used to be on this block, with its funky, colorful furnishings (lots of purple and red here), lighting and gifts. I can't say I've ever purchased anything here, but it is definitely a welcome respite from all the chain stores moving into the Uptown area.

My vizsla pup came down with parvo at 9 weeks. Thanks to their excellent around the clock care for 5 grueling days-he made it.
This is not your "touchy, feely" kind of clinic. These people are all business regarding your pet. The upside is your pet will probably receive the best care anywhere in the Midwest for a variety of difficult to treat illnesses, the downside is the cost, and a somewhat impersonal attitude by much of the staff. We were only able to visit our dog once during his entire stay. And the initial vet who diagnosed our dog unflinchingly told us that the two previous dogs brought in and diagnosed with parvo were put to sleep because their owners were unable to pay for treatment.
Fortunately, our bill came in at $150 under the initial estimate. An online search also revealed that my bill was a lot less than other people who had taken their parvo stricken pups to comparable research universities for similar treatments/lengths of stay.
They also have 24 hr/7 day a week emergency care. If your dog has a run of the mill injury during the day on a Saturday or Sunday-I would probably take him/her to a Banfield clinic instead-their initial office visit starts at about $40 vs. $175 at the U.
But if you have something really out of the ordinary, I would probably skip the local vet and go straight to the U-it's where all of your pet's diagnostic tests are likely being sent anyways.

Great place, and a surviver in the tough retail landscape. Good selection of vintage wear, some hip new stuff too (especially if you are into the colors black and red). Less stinky and better laid out than its closest competitor, Ragstock.
Used to be called "Tatters and Platters," back when it sold records. I could be wrong-but I think it used to have more than one location as well.

If you can get past the winos panhandling in the parking lot-Chi-Lake Liquor is a decent place to shop. They have good prices on beer and wine, and a large selection of harder spirits.
The location is well lit with wide aisles, which makes it easy to get in, get what you're looking for-and get out. They also accept credit cards, while many smaller liquor stores do not.
Unfortunately, the parking lot is usually a circus, and E. Lake Street is always a nightmare. But if the somewhat sketchy neighborhood makes you nervous, don't fear, an off-duty Mpls cop is always guarding the front door.

Need ingredients for an exotic dish you just downloaded off Epicurious? Well, this is the place!
Situated not far from a very good Greek restaurant and a good Middle Eastern deli-this grocer combines a lot of both. Bill's offers good prices on lots of bulk items such as canned olive oil, rice, and chickpeas. It also offers some things you wouldn't expect in a primarily Greek/Middle Eastern shop. Such as a fairly broad, reasonably priced selection of cheeses beyond feta (they have about 8 different kinds of feta, too), and a suprisingly decent selection of Italian hard salami.
I know ghee is a staple of Indian cuisine, but I've never seen it offered for sale before this place. There are also a lot of Indian spices, although the Wedge Co-op has a few more not carried here.
They also have a huge selection of olives at much better prices than most "olive bars" around town.
If I could change a few things about this place-I would add a wider variety of bread, not just pita bread and lavash. I would also add more fresh and dried fruits and vegetables as an alternative to Rainbow foods across the street. But don't let those small gripes dissuade you, Bill's is a great little gourmet food shop.

We have been taking our vizsla pup to Uptown Vet since we got him-and their service has always been great. The Vet takes never rushes her examinations, and is great about explaning her diagnosis and in answering all our questions. We have had 2 operations performed here-a neutering, and a benign tumor removal-and both turned out very well. The staff obviously loves animals, and it shows, both in their interactions with your pet, as well as in their followup regarding any phoned-in questions.
The clinic's interior design is really great as well. The clinic is divided into seperate areas for dogs and cats. The whole building is very cheerful-with yellow painted stucco walls, old fashion wood trim, and mocha colored, acid stained concrete floors. The waiting area quite large and open-and there is always plenty of water and treats for your pet.
