This is where construction workers, mail carriers, snow plow drivers, bicycle messengers, and basically anyone who needs to get up at the crack of dawn on bitterly cold Minnesota winter days goes to get the gear they need to survive outside.
They carry a full line of sorel boots, carhartt jackets and jumpsuits, gloves, caps, and all important thermal underwear among other things--all at worker friendly prices.

I went here a lot to purchase supplies for a summer school drawing class, and to get mats for a photography class. They have a full range of pencil brands and hardnesses, and a decent selection of papers.
I thought the mats were a little on the expensive side-especially the acid free ones which were about $15 for a 32" x 40" sheet.
As for the staff, it was really hit or miss. Sometimes I would get someone who knew exactly where an item was and would actually walk over to help me get it. Other times, you would have thought I was asking the counter clerk a differential calculus question instead of "hey, got any 9b pencils?"

Fresh produce, pretty flowers-what's not to love about the Minneapolis Farmers' Market. For me, it has always been a huge, colorful, crowded celebration of the 5 or so months in Minnesota that are not freezing cold, or brown and mucky.
From my experience, the market transitions from mostly plants and flowers in the spring, to a full-on produce fest from midsummer to early fall.
I recently discovered that the market is open weekends until the end of December. I have never gone past September-so I am interested to see what the Farmers' Market will have to offer later this year.

Careful consideration of color, height, and texture relationships are in full evidence at Noerenberg Memorial Gardens. If you are tired of the same 3 or 4 perennials that are found in almost every Minnesota Garden--you will find Noerenberg Gardens a refreshing change of pace.
While I thought they relied a little too heavily on pastel colors (especially lavender) the plantings beds were cleverly designed and took full advantage of the undulating landscape-in itself another nice respite from the flat, square plots of most Minnesota gardens.
The grape arbors with their 30+ year old vines are quite impressive as well.

Usually I purchase my photo supplies online-BH Photo is my retailer of choice. But occasionally, through poor planning and student assignment deadlines-I am forced to go to West Photo, where everything costs twice as much or more.
Apparently, poor planning is also a fact of life for West Photo. Even though they are located within a mile of the U of MN campus, and have been in business for 34 years, the school year always throws them for a loop, and they consistently run out of paper and chemicals during peak student demand periods (i.e. spring and fall semester).
Note: If you are a student, don't forget to show your student id for a discount. You might get a whole 5% off *some* items.

Lund’s wants both the gourmet food customer as well as the bargain hunter. The result: a schizophrenic mix of prices. For example-last week they had fresh sweet corn at 10 for $2 (very cheap), yet avocados are $2 each (most other stores around town sell them for a buck).
One good feature, however, is the quick checkout- lines move fast because most people can’t afford to buy more than 4 or 5 of their non-sale items at once.
Synopsis: Not as Upscale as Kowalski’s, not as cheap as Rainbow or Cub.

If you demand your grocery store to be as refined (and pricey) as a fine dining restaurant, then Kowalski's is your place. The meat is prime, the cheese imported, the bread artisan. The produce is architecturally arranged with nary a brown spot in site. The floors are carpeted, and the lighting subdued. And the price fully reflects all this attention to detail.
While the quality and class of the shopping experience takes away a lot of the drudgery of your average trip to the grocery store---Kowalski’s prices are way too steep, especially on your run of the mill gourmet items, such as brie cheese, and olives.
Bill’s Imported Foods has solved my olive dilemma, and the Trader Joe’s opening soon in St. Louis Park will probably provide my brie cheese fix. (Heads-up Whole Foods, and Lund's-your monopoly on imported cheese is in jeopardy as well!)

Yet another super kitschy gift superstore. Went here last Christmas to get an electronic chirping bird thing that Design Within Reach was out of.
Shelf after shelf filled with stuff here to clutter your desk at work, clutter your kitchen, clutter your bathroom, meanwhile satisfying your (or someone else's) inner "kidult".
Give a gift that says "I don't know what you really want, but I didn't want to look like an unhip, cheapskate-so I went to Patina."

The quality of their products is always very good. I couldn't stand the smell of the basted meat bones we got for our dog at Petsmart-but the ones we purchased here weren't offensive at all. They also carry a variety of specialty dog foods for pets who need more than a standard grocery store brand of food.
Another plus is that they are located right across the street from the Wedge Co-op. So you can get gourmet treats for you and your pet all in one trip.
They also offer dog training classes onsite.

Present Moment has a large selection of incense, herbs, homeopathic remedies, and books that will show you how to implement all of the above as you wander down your spirit path.
They are housed in a large rundown storefront under a faded late 60's era sign that would not look out of place on Haight Street in San Francisco.
Whether you want to candle your ears, scrape your tongue, flush your gall bladder, or cleanse your colon-they have the supplies and know-how to make it all possible.
They also offer Yoga classes in a tiny, cramped room in the basement. For the budget conscious alternative spirit, there is always a small cart of used books for $1 each out front.
