The Minneapolis Institute Of Arts is definitely a Minnesota treasure. It houses a huge permanent collection that includes many highly significant works, the most famous of which is probably Rembrandt's masterpiece "Lucretia."
While the institute doesn't get the same sort of high profile traveling exhibitions as NY or Chicago, it does have several smaller exhibitions throughout the year that are well worth seeing.
The Museum is expanding and will have a huge new gallery area open in 2006.
Admission to the Institute and almost all exhibitions is FREE.

I was flying to NY in July, and needed a cheap fare. Did a lot of comparing and found that Hobbit had the best price by about $100. Yeah, it was on crappy Sun Country airlines-but it was also non-stop-unlike any of the other majors except Northworst.
Another bonus is for the internet-phobic--with Hobbit travel you actually get to make your reservations with a live person located in the Twin Cities.

Kitchen Window has a huge selection, ranging from kitchen gadgets to high end cookware. While fun to browse, their prices on all except the smallest items usually leave me to pause. I feel somewhat guilty for not going here to purchase kitchen items, but it is hard for me to justify paying $350 for a cookware set that would cost $150 on Amazon.

Fiori occupies a large portion of an old brick building in a recently revived and yuppified section of Northeast Minneapolis,
In their renovated warehouse space, Fiori combines unique and unusual floral elements to create breathtakingly beautiful bouquets of a quality not usually seen this far from the coasts.
You would think a bit of snobbishness would accompany all this talent---but not at all. Every person I have dealt with at Fiori has been an absolute sweetheart.

The location is small, the selection shallow, yet Hum's will always carry a special place in the hearts of many that grew up in the South Minneapolis neighborhood. Maybe it was the central location on Hennepin, or the cool retro modern neon signage, or more likely the fact that they delivered pretty much anything you wanted, anytime of day.

Surdyks has a giant selection of wine, beer, and spirits (supposedly, they are the largest liquor store in the Midwest). They have occupied a prominent spot in the former Polish immigrent area of North East Minneapolis since the end of the Prohibition Era.
For those who actually attempt to pair wine with their food, they have wine consultants on site to give you recommendations on your purchase. For the brew snob crowd, they have a large selection of imported beers. For those moments when only an esoteric, triple-fermented beer handmade by monks in a Belgian monastery will do, Surdyks is a good bet.
Connected to the main store through a separate entrance is a gourmet food and cheese shop. It has a very good offering (maybe even the best in the Twin Cities) of imported cheeses. They also sell pate, saucisson, hand cut meats, and basically anything imported and tasty that will send your cholesterol count soaring higher than Ty Cobb’s batting average.

Mercado Central is often referred to as the "Latin" Calhoun Square. It sits on a corner of E Lake Street in an area that features many new Hispanic businesses. Unlike these storefronts, however, Mercado houses about 50 businesses all under one roof. They include several bakeries, a bookstore, a butcher, clothing stores, a candy store/piñata shop, and several restaurants. The place is usually pretty bustling, but there is almost always a place to sit in the modestly furnished cafeteria area.

Red Rooster is a small store front on Ceder Avenue where you go for all of your high performance auto part needs. I didn't have a high performance auto, per se, but I happened to have some high end synthetic oil in my car's engine (Amsoil) and needed to purchase some more. Red Rooster was the only place in South Minneapolis to carry it.
The guys that run the store are great. They had exactly what I was looking for and even offered to go out and check out my car engine in the parking lot!

I had the fortunate experience of accompanying a friend here to one of their 40% off sales. I'm not into jewelry making myself, but it was interesting from a sociological standpoint if nothing else. Generations of women, from high school to senior citizen, were all scrambling for the delightful baubles they had had their eyes on for months. It was a joyous celebration of handicraft, alternative living, and a complete surrender to gender stereotype all rolled up in one.
Oh, and the beads, as far as I could tell, were plentiful, and the selection was large, with hundreds of black trays full of bead in all sorts of sizes and materials arranged in racks and in glass cases throughout the store.

Part Norwegian Craft store, part deli, 100% old country. If you want to purchase kits or take classes on Scandinavian needlepoint, or brush up on your rosemailing, this is the place. Whereas the deli serves up all the yucky Scandinavian favorites such as fish balls, and lutefisk, along with a variety of cheeses such as Gjetost, Nokkelost, and Vasterbotten.
The store's facade and location are at total odds with each other. The quaint, carefully handpainted signage and well maintained store looks about as out of place on E Lake Street as your sweet old granny would look moshing at a Korn concert.
