I have been shopping at Pike and Western for the past three years and am really impressed with the selection of wines, and the staff's graciousness towards novice wine drinkers like myself. Their recommendations are usually spot-on and they are respectful of any price boundaries you tell them when making a purchase. If they don't have the wine in stock, they are wonderful at tracking it down -- no matter how obscure. Be sure to take time to read the large index cards with staff comments and recommendations, not only are they humorous, but they don't bombard you with industry ratings.

Andy's Auto Repair was recommended by NPR's weekly "Car Talk" show. The shop specializes in Japanese vehicles, though they service European vehicles as well. Before Andy's I was quite pessimistic about auto repair shops. Recently I took a Subaru Outback to have a tune up there (the car's first in several years) and was thoroughly impressed by Andy's honesty regarding what I should and should not have serviced. Not once did Andy ever pressure me to have something extra replaced or repaired. A tune up cost me less than $400 and his team even meticulously cleaned every door lock of the rust that accumulated from the car's previous life in Boston. They did not charge me anything for this service. Originally, the Subaru dealer told me I would have to replace ALL the locks. Andy's accepts checks or credit cards and can arrange for you to pick up the car after hours.
